Free ferry service from Hua Hin to Pattaya available in January

 

BANGKOK, 28 December 2016 (NNT) - The Ministry of Transport will allow tourists to ride a ferry boat between Pattaya and Hua Hin for free as a New Year gift. 

The Marine Department will carry out a test run of the ferry from December 30th to 31st to ensure its safety and the readiness of the piers and other facilities. The ferry service will be available to passengers for free from January 1st to 15th. It will start collecting 1,250 baht from each passenger when it is officially open to the public after the period. 

Two ferry services will be available per day. The first one will leave Hua Hin from 8.30 am on a 113-kilometer journey and will take approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes to reach Pattaya. The second trip will leave Pattaya at 3.30 pm for Hua Hin. The ferry can carry a maximum of 150 passengers per trip. 

In its initial phase, there will be only one ferry whereas the second ferry will be added to the service in March 2017. The total capacity of the to-be-added ferry is 260 passengers.

1 hour 40 is 100 minutes (60+40). Trip is 113km.

 

113km in 100 minutes is 1.13km per minute, x 60 = 67.8 kph.

 

But that's still an average speed. Factor in the slow speed passage through the business at both ends and we're still looking at a ferry capable of 80++ kph.

The "approximate" journey time is calculated based upon the entire journey being covered at the absolute maximum speed and minimum distance.  It will of course take probably twice as long, if it happens at all.

(113/100)*60=67.8KpH.

 

67.8KpH*0.621371=42.13 mpH

Aekarach Khantharo, head of the regional marine office, said the ferry service will ply between a fishing pier in Hua Hin and Pattaya’s Bali Hai pier, which has been improved to accommodate the service.

It will take 2 hours and 26 min at a 27 knot speed. A average speed of 36.6 knots would be required for 1 hour 40 min trip.

 

Maybe Thai math or they have hired van drivers as pilots to make it faster.

Many modern catamaran ferries can typically sail at an excess of 40 knobs= 74.1xx km/h. 

 

This one is a 48 knob one, so pretty fast for a ship:

Once they have added the obligatory loud sporty exhaust pipe, big spoiler and go faster stripes I'm sure they'll be able obtain 50 knots. At least being seasick should keep the bloke driving awake...

Mrs Dave's younger sister has got a job working on this ferry.  She will be a customer service host.  Or stewardess she will be getting bhat 14,000 a month

Its actually 67.8kmh.

 

This vessel (2016, 275 passengers) has a quoted service speed of 70kmh:

However:

So, 27 knots * 1.852 = 50 km/h

with 113 km distance that's ~ 2h 15 min for one trip

 

Seems, the Thai naval engineers have access to a new technology, a time machine, allowing them to reduce the trip to 1h30

I live in Hua Hin. I wonder how many more bar fights and stabbings we are going to have?

 

Now that the "I look like I just got out of prison" people are going to be arriving from Pattaya.

 

any idea where the ferry will land in Hua Hin?

where do you buy tickets?

you know, information you can use.

So it leaves HH in the morning and Patts in the afternoon. . And does that mean if you leave from Pattaya the return is the next morning?

The cabin boy was a dirty little nipper ! Anyone who lines their @$$ with broken glass to circumcise the skipper has to be !

 

BC Ferries built 3 "FastCat" ferries at huge cost back between 1996-2000. They were vehicle/passenger carrying catamaran style ferries that were supposed to cut 30+ minutes off a one way run from Vancouver Island to the mainland (and visa-versa of course). Their top speed was supposed to be 34 knots (62.9 km/hr) loaded and 45 knots (83.25 km/hr) empty.

 

Unfortunately they didn't work out as planned. Complaints started rolling in almost as soon as the ferries started operating due to the very large "wash" they created. As a result, the Ferry Corp had to alter routes and travel at slower speeds for long distances on the outbound and inbound portions of each trip. They could only crank up the speed once they were in deep water in the middle of the straight. As a result, they ended up only saving about 15 minutes per trip (or less).

The government tried unsuccessfully to sell those ferries then gave up and put them up for auction. They sold for less than 5% of what it cost to build them. They were then flipped to an outfit in Abu Dhabi that specializes in yachts, who eventually apparently just gave them to Egypt a couple years ago.

 

I thought they would have been perfect for the Gulf (of Thailand) runs as there is such a large body of open water to traverse. Add that the ferries could carry a whack of transport trucks, passenger vehicles and passengers, and wouldn't need "specialized" docks of any kind (just something they could drop their ramp on).

Probably too big for this run though, and too expensive to operate. Though if they were only doing 1 round trip per day maybe it would be cost effective enough. The ferry they are going to use is passenger only which will suck eggs in no time I imagine.
