Hi,

I'm going to be working next year in Thailand. I'm going to be trialing out a new job on a work permit. My plan is to use airbnb for the first few months to find a short term rental and then I will look for something more permanent, so that i'm not locked into the job and can try it out first. However, I noticed on this page:

http://www.rd.go.th/publish/21987.0.html

that you need to get something called a TIN? and they ask for " House registration book of taxpayer/estate administrator ". Now I don't know what that is, but if i'm staying in airbnb for the first few months, my accommodation isn't a permanent address, nor will I be registered on any lease. Is this an issue?

But then they mention you can also use something called a PIN as well to do tax. What is PIN? I know the company put you on some flat 15% foreign tax scheme as well.

In your case you need a PIN, just go to any tax office once you have your work permit and apply, it's a very simple process that takes 30 minutes and the tax office people are some of the friendliest governement workers you can meet.

So if my residence is not a permanent address, I won't have a problem? etc staying in hotels etc for the first bit.

No problem, the visa is the only thing that is a prerequisite for a PIN, ust tell the truth that you're living in a hotel.

Ok, thank you. One other question, If I were to leave early in the middle of my work visa (Say the job wasn't working out), how does tax get finalized before leaving the country?

I'm not sure, people file tax returns every January but I guess in that situation there may be an earlier way to settle the account. The Thai tax people are really great, don't be afraid to go ask them quetions such as these.

I wouldn't advise doing that, simply, you never know when in the future you might want to return for whatever reason, plus, it may well be that the Revenue owes you money.
