Coal-fired plants, emissions targets to be decided shortly

BANGKOK: -- POWER ISSUES will be a major concern in this year, as the fate of the Krabi and Thepa coal-fired power plants will be determined and the quest to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions remains unfulfilled.

Power-plant development will be in focus in 2017, as the government solicits public opinion on the Krabi coal-fired power plant in January and the allowance for the Thepa coal-fired power plant by this year. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) will also continue to invest more in renewable energy.

Independent energy expert Prasart Meetam said this year would be momentous in defining the future of the two new coal-fired power plants in the South, after the projects had been delayed due to strong protests.

They should skip the coal fired plants, as they need 6 years to be built, gas powered plants only need 4 years. Besides, a gas powered plant can easily adjusted to the output necessary, whilst a coal fired plant cannot. The gas powered plant is much cleaner as well.

If the government would only think about the abundance of sun in Thailand, and how solar energy could be produced by thermo-solar technology and photo-voltaic, plus wind energy from the shores of the gulf, Thailand would be much better off.

At 50 degrees northern Latitude, Germany produces renewable energy in peak times up to 87% of its own demand. Forcing the use of those technologies in Thailand during the next years, would make those coal-, or gas fired plants completely redundant. Thailand then could even think about exporting energy and producing H2 to be used in buses around the country.

Wow, it appears that you are the ignorant idiot here, lungnorm, with your simplified and incorrect conclusion. There is obviously a "too much" when it comes to CO2 in the atmosphere. Leave it to the experts who have studied this topic for years.

Plant life loves CO2. No CO2 then no vegetation on the planet, simple as that.

If renewable energy is what is wanted then it has to be hydro; plenty of water, consistent rain and big dams. Wind farms not so good since the wind does not always blow. Solar panels only 50% efficient even when the sun is shining. At night time they are useless. Nuclear is OK except for the problem of getting rid of the waste.

Dream on renewable proponents. Your world will come crashing down when you have no air con or refrigeration or lights.

Other renewable energy countries are now finding out the hard way via constant blackouts.

It's like trying to discuss brain surgery with 1st graders.

Do you guys get electric shots if researching a topic or listening to a panel of experts or did you just take some secret oath never to do that?

Your medical doctors must hate you ... "No, doc, actually our bodies need high blood pressure to function well. All this anti-high blood pressure propaganda is just crazy talk."

"as they need 6 years to be built, gas powered plants only need 4 years".

6 years seems way too long, more like 4 years, and gas powered plants take about 34 months in Thailand.

Let me guess, you're NOT an electrical engineer, and never held any job associated with electricity generation.

No but i can put you in contact with a good Solar company who generate a lot of electricity for the UK even though its only sunny half the time

Yep, anything is possible if you have no idea about the problems and technicalities involved. And every topic involving electricity generation will have fools spouting about solar. Germany in particular is having grid stability problems because of its relatively high input of intermittent energy sources. There is still no practical way of storing the huge volumes of energy required, and the concept of producing Hydrogen completely ignores that it is a very dangerous fuel.

BTW Next time you have heart problems I can recommend a good dentist.

^Siemens who are in the power generation game sold their solar division.
