December 8, 200619 yr Hello everyone I'm looking for clarity here for my small brain. I believe if I have understood correctly that you must now have either have the ESOL level 3 plus citizenship test or pass the goverments citizen testing exam(Knowledge of UK life), this test changing from the 2nd April 2007 to now gain your ILR. My wife will be applying for her ILR in June 2007 when can she take this knowledge of UK life test? It is our intention when she has been in the UK for 3 years to apply for UK citizenship will she have to retake the citizen test again or will this test for the ILR suffice? Many thanks Janner
December 8, 200619 yr She should take it when she is ready, but before she has to apply for ILR. A trite answer, I know, but I can't think of a better one. Having passed the test to obtain her ILR, she wont have to take it again when she applies for naturalisation.
December 8, 200619 yr Author GU22 Many thanks for your reply. I was wondering what the difference would be in the change of testing in other words would it be best to take the test prior or post the 2nd April date when the test changes. Also was there any time constraints on the test ie, must be within 2 months of the ILR application? Janner

Janner As far as we know you must just have passed, no time constraints Was you aware of this web site http://www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk/htmlsite...kground_10.html Gives you all the info and what to expect at the test centre. I think you know the alternative is to pass English ESOL level 3 with citizenship content then you dont have to sit the test. Good luck to your wife
December 8, 200619 yr Author Mahout Angrit, many thanks for your reply. I asked about the constraints of time because my wife would want to take the test asap whilst allowing time for her to study the syllabus. Thus the earlier you take it the more time would be on your side should you have to retake the test. I have called our local college the ESOL course is free if you have been in the UK for 12 months but the course is heavly over subscribed with a long waiting list ! Again thank you Janner

Yes understandable, good thinking and I see your point that the syllabus is changing in April too so she needs to study the book which is appropriate to the test she's going to take. Can't find what the changes to the syllabus will be yet. Perhaps nobody knows yet! In your case it may make sense to go for the second edition syllabus provided the book comes out soon as she'd have plenty of chances to retake between April and June, you can retake every 7 days. Anyway be positive dont talk about failure Once again good luck Edited December 8, 200619 yr by Mahout Angrit
December 13, 200619 yr Sorry to ask, but can you confirm this. After April 2007 a person applying for ILR MUST have passed this test? I'm wondering how I'd missed this important bit of info. I ask as my wife will be applying around Dec 2007. While she would probably be happy to study, we are expecting a child in June 2007 and attending college won't be easy while mothering a child. I also wonder what form these tests take. My wife can converse comfortably at home and work, but may not know what a verb or pronoun is. Thanks.
December 14, 200619 yr From 2 April 2007 any applicant for ILR will need to pass either an ESOL with Citizenship course, or the Life in the UK test. The test costs £34.00 and is a series of multiple choice questions about living in the UK. Scouse.
December 14, 200619 yr I'm wondering how I'd missed this important bit of info. As you missed it you may like to go through this thread on this forum http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?sh...p;hl=settlement If she cannot attend an ESOL level 3 with CITIZENSHIP course and pass it (in which case she will be exempt from the test) she must attend a test centre in your area (by appointment) and do the test. It is done on a computer and is multiple choice answers and the thinking is that as the test is conducted in English and if she can pass the test on "Life in UK"(no language questions about adjectives and nouns) then her language skills will be of a suitable standard. Books are available with the syllabus from WH Smiths and others but beware the syllabus changes for tests after April 2007 so you will need edition 2. See this site for further details and test centre locations http://www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk/ Edited December 14, 200619 yr by Mahout Angrit
