Govt dismisses claims over contaminated canned foods from Thailand

BANGKOK, 6 January 2017 (NNT) – The government has denied as false a message spread on social media claiming that canned foods manufactured in Thailand were contaminated with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

A statement has been released by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its website to dispel the rumor that Thai authorities had issued an alert against consumption of HIV-tainted canned foods from Thailand, especially fruits. The ministry indicated that such false information had earlier been circulated on social media between 2013 and 2014 in some countries, such as Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, before reemerging late last year.

The statement said Royal Thai Embassies and Team Thailand offices in foreign countries have several times rejected the false allegation. It confirmed that Thailand’s production of processed foods complies with internationally recognized health and safety standards, including the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Regulations and the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP).

Thai Embassies, Consulates-General and Team Thailand units around the world have been assigned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work together to prevent the dissemination of false news that could tarnish the image of Thai products. They are to issue prompt clarification to consumers and take legal action against anyone responsible.

Plastic rice, contaminated canned foods....it would seem that some are trying to cause harm to the country, and this type of thing would do it!

Whether legitimate or not.....as in many things, once the rumours start, it can be difficult to stop.

Everything is possible in the land of fake smiles

"...canned foods manufactured in Thailand were contaminated with HIV..."

Hard to accept this has any substance, and the statement released by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "...confirmed that Thailand’s production of processed foods complies with internationally recognized health and safety standards, including the GMP and HACCP", seems appropriate.

But, it's a pity there is nothing being said (by the MFA) refuting allegations of slave labor and other HR abuses in the industry (e.g. Natural Fruit and Thai Union Group).

Transmitting HIV through canned goods is not possible, even in LOS.  http://www.aidsmap.com/Survival-outside-the-body/page/1321278/

Agree about the HIV, but wonder why anyone would cite this particular virus from this particular country? Credibility?

How can it be credible? It is scientifically impossible.

I would say, economic trolling to attack the FACE value

If your going to take action in foreign countries please remember they are democracies that operate on rule of law.

The problem is Thai FDA !

They have no clue about food safety , and only their GMP counts, but is totally b*sh*t.

This people at FDA are only there to get money from companies and food safety comes at a second place.

They always go in denial phase immediately. Remember back in the days of major league AIDS?  Thailand's tourism sector needed preserving < > denial -as its well known for nocturnal activities other than rat spotting- denied having any.....

No HIV in canned fruits, just plenty of pesticides in vegetables...

Quite true of course ... the money.  That said, is this somehow different that other government agencies?

I don’t think HIV can survive in a salt, sugar and MSG rich environment. Thai canned food is safe.

Given that Thailand turns a blind eye to abuses of any and every foreigner by Thais here, from Burmese slave labour to once rich victims of fraud based solely on the idea of protecting Thai criminals and sod the foreigners - I suggest that the same treatment be given to incredible stories affecting the country.  Given that no one can say anything about anyone committing wrong here it would be sufficient simply not to mention the obvious facts whatever false rumour is being spread.  If people can hang themselves with their hands tied behind their back and feet bound in the middle of a terrace on Kao Tao and it be said to be suicide then I guess anything is possible in Thailand - so let the rumours fly and perhaps it will be understood that lying can go both ways.

I'm not so sure about that, I've heard of people getting HIV from bad meat in the can.

This is the negative effect  social media has,  there's more untruths out there than truths, so you adopt an attitude anything you see or read on the net don't believe. Now having said that,  Can I interest you in 1 billion dollars , a friend of mine left me to look after but I need to store it in someone's bank account..............................:cheesy:

Just hijacking the topic, Australia just banned imports of green (raw) prawns from Asia

due to white spot disease and guess who the largest importer to Australia is ?

Thailand is one of the world’s largest producers of prawns. The country witnessed a phenomenal expansion of vannamei prawn aquaculture in the 2000s. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the production of vannamei prawns in Thailand reached its peak in 2011 at 603,227 tonnes before a disease outbreak halved its production.

In 2014-2015, Australia imported 7,458 tonnes of prawns from Thailand, making Thailand the second largest exporter of frozen prawns to Australia, behind China.

Thailand exports significant quantities of tiger prawns to Australia - 1,115 tonnes in 2014, making Australia Thailand’s third most important market for this

That was a joke and I think you failed to get it so let me explain. Bad meat = a penis belonging to someone with HIV, can = derriere of another person. Since anal sex is a prime source of HIV transmission it IS possible to get it from bad meat in the can.
