January 9, 20179 yr I'm looking to source a new laptop in Thailand and would be grateful for some advice. The reason for the purchase is that I am interested in having a go at learning to write some simple android apps, so any advice from existing developers would be especially welcome. My code writing experience is limited to old IBM mainframes, I worked as an MVS OS/390 systems programmer for many years and specialised in writing machine code. I have an MSc from the OU and although this did cover OO programing to some degree, my skills, largely forgotten now, are distinctly legacy based. My only experience in PC programming was to write my own quotation & invoicing system using a VB front end into an RDBMS, so I realise that I've got a bit of a learning curve ahead. I know that I need a reasonably capable machine and I have read that a gaming laptop would be more than suitable, but I have zero interest in gaming. My thoughts on requirements are as follows:- Budget of up to approx 45K baht Must have a licensed version of Windows 10 i7 processor Seperate GPU, preferably Nvidia Minimum 8GB RAM, preferably 16GB Comes with an SSD or is capable of having one added without difficulty Decent quality and proven manufacturer reliability That's about it. I quite like Asus as a manufacturer, this is just based on my experience with their smart phones, but as they seem to be quite large players in the laptop market .... Many thanks for your thoughts
