Uhhmmm....it is not cold in Thailand, in fact it is rather warm which makes wearing clothes quiet unnecessary. It was not until WWII or so that Thai people started to wear clothes on the upper part of their bodies, but still today I often see Thais walk around in public almost naked. I say off with the clothes and <deleted> these western standards of decency......

Agree with you in broad terms, but there are two areas where we differ. The first is when people break the law it becomes news and the second is that the tourist numbers if they are dropping is due to the zero dollar tours being outlawed and not news articles like this. 

you see Pai was original a nice laid back hippie town, then the Thai's discovered it and made it into a thai resort town . no girl bar mostly chinese and thai tourist. they chase the hippies out with widespread drug inpections and spot piss test. so all the hippies ran for cover, cambodia, laos,vietnam  so this means they are going to have to start up their anti drug program again

It's got nothing to do with the fact that then sex industry exist, or that you can buy drugs, or any other illegal activity.  The fact is, if you visit a foriegn country, you abide by the laws of that land.  Visit an Arab country and you'll be locked up for kissing, oven a little peck on the cheek.  So, we know that generally, publicly, the Thai people are prudes.  Unless you're at a beach, you dress conservatively, or risk upsetting the locals.

Also, Buck naked is an American term.  Butt naked is proper English.

Just because he's a 'westerner' why does it let 'western side down'?  thais are like 12 year olds with their 'hurting hearts' over the smallest thing. Of course it's impolite and a sign or better still catch them and just say 'please don't do it' is enough not all this drama

Rubbish. How many times have posters like you claimed that tourists will stop coming to Thailand and yet they come year after year in increasing numbers? No, tourists won't stop coming to Thailand because Thailand is tolerant of their stupidity.

50 years ago it was the opposite (female) western tourists were outraged by Thai women bathing naked and doing traditional dances with naked breasts, in those days the temples were not a problem.

There is a park area right in the niddle of the city.

Many young and good looking Danish women  sun bathing topless on the grass.

A few males too.

Most not totally nude, either sex.

And it is true as reported by a reply above, there are hilltribe people in THAILAND that have been here for ages breasts a swayin' as they bath in rivers and walk around in the sun - my housekeeper included. What's the big deal... especially in Pai. Thais can't have it both ways income from tourist and expecting them to be perfect.

 

Now I don't think going nude is a good idea but bikini's and stuff in pay does not seem bad to me. 

At least he is not defacating in the river as has been a problem before. Kind of crazy that Thais who used to run around with their breasts on show until not long ago (and still do at Songkran and around a pole in some places) have such contempt for the human body - it's not like you HAVE to look.

I used to visit Pai regularly over 20 years ago - nice quiet lay backed town, very few tourists , no drugs (that I was aware of) only a couple of local drinking spots, friendly people  - from what I hear now a days - don't think I will bother revisiting.

Yes i heard that too, trekking means renting a motocy without driverslicense right? And on the way to the mountains you buy some harddrugs from a local. That's what backpackers like to do when far from home and mummy can't see them.
