January 12, 20179 yr Hi All, I recently found that I was unable to update Zonealarm on one of my computers because it doesn't have the above mentioned windows service pack. After many hours last night and again this afternoon I haven't been able to find a way around it. I only use that particular computer to watch telly but will occasional check emails etc rather than boot up my desktop. My questions therefore are: - Is there a quick fix by way of a free download? - Is it worth paying for an upgrade to windows 10? - Can I simply leave it as it is and do Banking etc on a separate device (the one i'm on now) that is fully protected? Thank you for any replies :)
January 12, 20179 yr As long as you don't open any attachments in your email, you can still use windows 7. Have you checked with zone alarm? They might be able to give a better solution.Sent from my SM-G935F using Thaivisa Connect mobile app
January 12, 20179 yr Would the logical (and more secure) solution not be just to do your Windows Updates? They are after all primarily designed to fix security holes.
January 12, 20179 yr Might be time to update your Win 7 package...turn on update in your Windows settings. SP1 was released released 22 Feb 2011...and been about a zillion more updates since.
January 12, 20179 yr As long as your Windows 7 installation is activated you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

Upgrading with install media still works. I have just upgraded a Win7 machine this afternoon as I have done dozens of times since last July.
January 12, 20179 yr I had heard of some "backdoor" methods MS had left open after 29 Jul 16 like mentioned at below websites but didn't think they worked anymore. Good to know....thanks. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/missed-free-windows-10-upgrade-psst-heres-backdoor/ https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-upgrade-to-windows-10-for-free-after-the-july-29-deadline/
January 12, 20179 yr And I could bet that the precondition for a W10 upgrade is W7 SP1. Maybe someone can proof me wrong.
January 12, 20179 yr I am not using the "assistive technologies" workaround because it isn't necessary. I do use the genuineticket method but that is only to save wasting time with the upgrade process and can go directly to clean install on an OEM Win7 machine where the product key sticker is no longer legible . In fact since the anniversary update (or about then anyway) it has been possible to upgrade a Win7 machine using the product key or a Win8 machine without doing anything. Simply clean install Win10 and it will extract the Win8 Product Key from the UEFI without asking. After installation, go online and it will be activated. There has been some speculation about why Microsoft would allow this after publicly stating that the free upgrade finished last July. Microsoft has been asked directly by some tech journalists but, as far as I have read, have declined to comment.

Yes SP1 is the minimum requirement for a manual upgrade from Win7. But obviously if bypassing the upgrade and clean installing Win10, it isn't relevant.
January 12, 20179 yr I have used an old version of Zone Alarm for years with no problems or malware being able to exploit it. Can't you just leave it as it is? Edited January 12, 20179 yr by katana
January 13, 20179 yr As long as you have a reasonable internet package, download the offline installer for Win7 SP1, and install it...... https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5842
January 13, 20179 yr I upgraded to windows 10 on one of my old laptops using the Ease of Access method, no problems at all. See Pib post ID9. Google how to upgrade using Ease of Access. Edited January 13, 20179 yr by elfpattaya
