BANGKOK, January 13, 2017 -- The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a new regional program to combat human trafficking in Asia. The 21.5 million USD budget will be awarded to Winrock International, a U.S.-based development organization, to operate the USAID Asia Counter Trafficking in Persons (USAID Asia CTIP) program.

USAID Regional Development Mission for Asia Director Beth S. Paige said this new program is part of a long-term and comprehensive effort by the U.S. Government towards ending human trafficking in the region by 2030. USAID and Winrock will work together with Asian governments, civil society organizations and other stakeholders in the region to reduce human trafficking in Asia.

Announced on the U.S. National Human Trafficking Awareness Day on January 11, the program will support Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states in the implementation of the ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children

The program will initially focus on human trafficking in the Lower Mekong countries of Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam as well as Bangladesh. Meanwhile, USAID will be partnering with the private sector to develop action plans to reduce trafficking in targeted industries, including working with governments and the private sector to improve systems for safer and legal labor migration.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

How does USAID / Winrock plan to stop human trafficking, in a culture where impoverished rural families selling their children to pay their debts is the norm?

Note who gets the money...US software company

The 21.5 million USD budget

RTP should get this to work with

whichever way it will end up in the same pockets

The money gets swallowed up by professional NGO circuit travellers. High 6 figure salaries with benefits and ongoing 'sustainable' job regeneration.
