The Highways Department has sought an addition of 3.3 billion baht special budget from the Transport Ministry for the maintenance of highways in the Northeast, the North and recently in southern provinces from flooding since last September.

Department head Mr Thanin Somboon said Friday that the department’s existing budget for road repairs is not enough to meet the demand, noting that total damages to roads and highways from flooding since last September were estimated at 3,661 million baht, including 800 million baht for the roads in the South from recent flooding during January 1-12.

The department has been allocated with 150 million baht emergency fund for road repairs in southern provinces on top of 200 million baht annual emergency fund for road repairs, said Mr Thanin.

Thailand is a tough place to maintain the roads.

The government paying for a certain amount of top covering such as asphalt but only getting 1/4 inch instead of the proper amount does not help; I would strongly suggest having inspectors not on the take to inspect roads before all payments are made and complete... The high travel tourist bus routes seem to get the majority of the money as they probably should but, infrastructure and roads all over the country go hand in hand.

Needs 3.3 billion!

No one thought there might be flooding in the South that approved funding from the Transportation Ministry missed its estimate by thousands of percent?

Or did the Minstry in its submittal for FY 2017 Budget consciously "low ball" the estimate for the Muslim-majority South's need for emergency road repair and give priority of funding to other parts of Thailand (ie., Bangkok)?  But ultimately, additional funding shouldn't be a problem as Prayut can "ensure" that the NLA authorizes more debt to generate the funds.

This just in, waiting list for new benzs now extended!

Like the American Democrats, "Never let a good crisis go to waste."

3.3 million baht, hmmm. that would be 2.2 after the facilitation fee of 1.1 goes to whoever signs off on it.

maybe if they actually spent the amount they were given on doing a proper job of the roads/bridges etc the roads etc would not fall apart so quickly and easily. By the time they remove their own personal kickbacks from the amounts allowed there is not enough to actually do a proper job, its no good getting inspectors.engineers to approve it as they have their lives and that of their families threatened if they do not pass it, we have engineering friends that have had it happen to them. What they need to do is not allow the sub quotes/contracting they do now to happen as this is where all the money for a good job goes, it needs to be organized by the govt itself and then the ones in charge held responsible for any future collapse or lack of quality, if they have to put guarantees in place that would bankrupt them if the job isnt done properly it would soon stop but that would also remove the money from all those elected officials that pay to get their position in the first place

What i notice here is that they repair a road then 2 years later they repair that same piece of the road again.

Looking at the OP photograph it seems as though the asphalt is a bit thicker than 1/4 of an inch. More like 2 to 3 inches.
