Have you already been diagnosed with a biopsy? Then do your own due diligence as to what are the current treatments for your particular cancer. For some cancers there is a general agreement on first line treatments so you should be able to anticipate what the oncologist will recommend. That should allow you to find a more "reasonably priced" oncologist. If you don't respond to your first treatment then you need to find a specialist as the treatment options now increase and you would be eligible for clinical trials. Regardless, learn to read cancer survival charts and terms such as PFS, OS, CR, etc. Google all treatments by using generic drug names and not trade names.

And be aware that for some rarer cancers outcomes in Thailand are statistically less favorable than in "the west" and, at least in the US, outcomes are more favorable in the few major cancer research centers and adjacent facilities.

Good luck!

It's "Mohr Rat". He's my doctor and yes I recommend you see him. He's among the best. If you do a search in this forum for Dr. Rat you will see his address and telephone number. Yes, he begins seeing patients about 17:30. Also check the pinned list of medical recommendations. His contact is there too.

I don't see Dr Rat on the pinned list, if somebody lets me have the contact details I'll see he gets added.

Ooops I guess it's "Mhor Rak" and not Rat. Guess I have been mispronouncing his name for years now.  Rak Tananuvat, M.D. Practices and does surgery at Sriphat, teaches at CMU http://www.med.cmu.ac.th/dept/ent/2012/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=17&Itemid=226&lang=en

Clinic:

I''d like to join Khun Elektrified in recommending Dr.  Rak Tananuvat who has the evening clinic on Chang Puek Road, as well as, possibly, being available through Maharaj/Suan Dok hospital's Sriphat service.

Ten years ago, the ENT I visited at CMR to figure out why I was having trouble swallowing found "nothing:" a week later, a friend recommended Dr. Rak; he immediately had a biopsy done, and it turned out to be squamous cell carcinoma near the base of the tongue.

Hope you get whatever it is diagnosed soon !

best wishes, ~o:37;

No, I haven't been diagnosed. This is what I'm looking for...A recommended specialist in diagnosing...

Then at this juncture you want access to good pathology lab. The pathologist will determine the specific cancer. These days many types of cancer are targeted at the cellular and genetic level so a precise diagnosis is critical.

Thank you all for the great advice.

Can anyone tell me approximate cost for a biopsy?

I've got no insurance. Maybe smarter to get insurance before going to the Dr? Or better to go and get it checked ASAP?

Can I still get insurance if I've been diagnosed? Eg, to cover chemo etc...

I'm in Chiangmai now. Normally I live 75km outside CM, but here to see Dr in evening.

What about treatment, how much does that typically run?

A lot of questions, I know.

Yes . The longer you leave it the more potential for downside

No. Insurance doesnt work like that unfortunately or we would all be doing the same I imagine.

Best of luck and hope all turns out for the best for you

Thanks. Hypothetically, am I correct in assuming that if I get insurance, they likely wouldn't cover something like cancer if I made a claim within 90 days? I know each is different, but generally speaking....I believe I read that Bupa would be even longer, something like 6 months.

The onus is on you to prove it wasn't pre-existing when you took the policy out. That doesn't mean someone had diagnosed it or you had suspected it, it's the simple question of how long the oncologist believes, in his expert opinion, the cancer had been present. Almost the same as taking out health insurance to cover future pregnancies and eight months later the baby is born and it's full-term
