If the Thais just smile all the tourists will come flooding back!

KOH SAMUI: -- Despite the bad weather Thais have been told all they need to do is smile and everything will be alright.

The tourists who cancelled their trips will come flooding back and everything will have a happy ending.

The message came as the Tourism Authority of Thailand descended on holiday island Koh Samui yesterday to launch "Welcome to Koh Samui 2017".

The project aims to mobilize the TAT with the government and private sector to help with the recovery from the bad weather that Samui and the south has experienced.

So yesterday TAT chiefs and officials from SME Bank got the ball rolling in Thai style with a beach clean up in Chaweng.

Interest free loans and a disaster fund were also announced for operators.

Thai New Agency said that visitors to Samui were down 15% and there were usually 3 million arrivals there annually. The high season has been hit with flight, hotel and restaurant cancellations.

But TNA said that "quality tourists" from Germany, Israel, the UK and Russia were now returning and added:

"Despite the destructive forces of mother nature if the Thai people smile then everything can return to normal".

Hey TAT!!!

I am actually smiling right now. In fact, I am rolling on the floor trying desperately to not pee in my pants from laughter.

Which Thai smile are you talking about? The one given while being scammed or the one when they know the foreigner doesn't understand that they are being ridiculed or the one that the police uses when it's time to issue a bogus traffic ticket or the one that......

Listen up, TaT; it's not just about the weather. We've had bad weather before which didn't stop the tourists. People are going next door. Your country is just getting too expensive vs quality received. People don't want to be deceived and are bored with fake products; the novelty's worn off. Suggest running with the times and at least sorting your currency out and some of the silly rules.

It's a simple equation. Farang arrives first trip and walks around with big fat stupid grin and gets smiles all day
Fast forward.. Farang now lives here drinking heavily sad, depressed bad Relationships, jaded to much TVisa and no more smiles for him
Not rocket science!!

I've been hearing very good things about Cambodia lately.... 30 percent cheaper, genuine smiles, infrastructure much improved, very palatable food (french influence!) for the farang taste at normal prices. Even the chinese tourists are happier there. Easy visa's, beautiful beaches and women and still an abundance of nature to enjoy.

The Thai can start smiling all they want again,  they are loosing the race for the "quality tourists", and all this can only end in tears for them.

smiling alone will not help. you have to restore confidence by catching and severely punishing the rouges who beat up tourists, commit snatch thefts, mug people and other activities that make life unpleasant for the visitors.

never forget many countries have beaches as good as thai  and you have to be ahead of the competition to get the tourists dollars and smiling will certainly, on its own, not achieve it.

Maybe for a lot of Thais  there are less and less reasons to smile  ...less tourist ,less jobs, longer hours, less pay ,cost of living up

still have to pay all the bills and send some home to parents and kids....

the formula is not that simple.  it is built over a long period of time, based upon trust, safety and security of the visitors.

Disagree cambodia is a true hell hole.thailand is a far better place to spend your time on every aspect maybe only the visa regulations procedure is a less hassle in cambo.

Correct, their currency is a real problem and combined with greed a recipe for disaster. Lived in Thailand many years and hadn't been back for a couple of years. I clearly noticed the increase, Chang is now priced same same as Singha, LOL, 80 THB in most beach-bars, LOL!

Talking about the beach, what is this double standard in Phuket? Get these sunbeds back, regulate it, make it a real business with real rules. Don't be ridiculous to even forbid the 'sand' beds in Patong. Tourists need shade!  Where do they hide? And why the double standards from beach to beach, Bangtao full with sunbeds & beach-bars, Surin none!

As far as Samui goes, start cleaning up all these ugly unfinished buildings/ruins from bankrupt developers. Plenty of them all over the place, it is bad! And one more issue, get your safety nets in place before the next monsoon season starts or do you want another tourist dying because of a box-jelly fish? Get these vinegar stations visible with full bottles and don`t hide the warning signs! Box-Jelly is the next dangerous sword of Damocles hanging over Samui if not dealt with responsibly and properly.

Maybe tourist will come back, but get your house in order first and abandon that greed hidden behind your smile.

This is the Samui forum, there have never been beach chair and umbrella operators here as all beaches have a resort front.

Some friends went to Koh Samui this year, one told me that they got scammed 5 times in the first week. Restaurants charging for something not ordered, motorbike rental claiming ridicolous amounts for damages that were there before...

You can guess if they want to come back next year.
