BANGKOK: -- Thai Chamber of Commerce estimated flood impacts to cost over 100 billion baht if it prolong.

Wichai Assarassakorn, deputy chairman of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, stated that if the flood crisis currently affecting all 12 southern provinces were to abate within the next few weeks damage to the national economy will not exceed 15 billion baht or 0.1% of GDP.

However, he said if  flooding is prolonged for 2-3 months, then the country could lose 85 – 120 billion baht in national income or 0.5 – 0.7% of GDP.

Rubber plantation could not withstand long flooding and rubber trees will die in flood water exceeding 20 days.

Palm trees will also suffer and will die if flooding is over a month or more.

On the impact to tourism industry in the South, he said it was relatively minimal with only tourism on the Gulf of Thailand affected.

Had the previous Governments invested in upgrading the southern infrastructure that would have saved many billions now n in the near future BUT???

And except some canals/pumps for the heart of BKK nothing has been done for many years to stop floodings/droughts.

A real masterplan is needed and some foreign experts should help with that.

If nothing is done it will cost billions of bath every year again plus all the inconveniance from it.

You would have to rename it Bangkok 2 to get aid and infrastructure upgrades.

Masterplans are what the Thai's need to come up with,

after all it's their country, remember?

Thai's don't need nor want our input,

that has been stated several times over,

so it's heard & respected.

Now they just need to stop complaining about their issues and proceed on how to fix or address them...

As is so often stated here;

if we don't like it,

we can return to our own countries.

Heard & respected.

Well this costs them again 100 billion baht....for that money they could have bought loads of waterpumps, deepened the rivers, built more lakes and so on. The draught also costed a load of money and the big flooding of BKK also wasn't cheap.

It's time they face their problems and protect the economy.

I always remember that this is Thailand, a place where most people cannot afford to go anywhere

except to a neighbouring country. It is not the same for most people on this forum who can either afford to

live here, or come here every year or two for their hard earned vacations. yes there are rich people here

just like there is in every other country, but in general I see a lot of hard working Thai people who do not

have the same opportunities as most Expats and vacation travellers.     This country that is the size of

Spain does not have the same wage scale, or like France or Germany. Try to remember that

before bashing the country you are staying in or visiting.

Even though I am not rich even in Canadian standards I can come visit Thailand every 2 to 3 years.

I always remember that.  Maybe more on this Forum should try do the same at least once in a while.
