The Khmer National United Party (KNUP) and the Cambodian National Justice Party (CNJP) have signed a cooperation agreement with the aim of merging for national elections in 2018. The move comes after Nhek Bun Chhay left his post as a deputy president of the royalist Funcinpec party and formed the KNUP. Mr. Bun Chhay is seeking to merge his new party with other small political parties.
 

Storm clouds grew over Funcinpec last February after more than a year of internal peace following reforms by party president Prince Norodom Ranariddh. Speaking after signing the cooperation agreement yesterday in Phnom Penh, Mr. Bun Chhay said his party had been in contact with other political parties to cooperate and unite for the 2018 elections.
 

“We spent much time talking and discussing with each other, especially about the framework of the CNJP,” he said. The agreement was formed because both parties had the same commitment and willingness to serve in the common interest with no corruption.
