Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha returns salute on Thursday at the headquarters of the Royal Thai Armed Forces in Bangkok.

BANGKOK — Pledging to solve the decade-long political divide once and for all, the junta earlier this week announced its latest drive for “national reconciliation,” though how much support it will get from contending factions remains to be seen.

After announcing it in concept at the start of the week, junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha set up a committee to begin working on the details Tuesday. Leaders of all the country’s major political groups said they accept the idea in principle but stressed the program is still too vague for a meaningful commitment.

"too vague for a meaningful commitment."

Sadly, when you burn bridges the cost of replacing them is astronomical.  No shortcuts here, sorry.

And no, there was not going to be a civil war.

If it's to produce anything worthwhile, there clearly must n objective and a structured approach.

IMHO law breakers (regardless of colour or alliliation), should not be pardoned.

Amnesty for past convictions not part of the process.

cancelling charges currently waiting to proceed not part of the process.

IMHO any person who appears before any reconciliation committee or whatever must first substantiate what they were trying to legitimately achieve before any of the recent events / problems occurred then go on to try to prove their innocence given their original objectives or prove reasons for their past actions which would be widely acceptable to a civil society. And further, as they state their original objectives they must be prove that their intent / policies were widely known, in detail, by all sectors of society at the original timeframe.

Also, IMHO all persons / parties appearing should make a firm and detailed statement of their future intentions, which must be well aligned to the development of all Thais with fairness and with appropriate resources stated within the intent. And the stated intent must clearly outline how all development will take place to ensure equal opportunity for all and with state support to ensure there is in reality equal opportunity for all.

Also, IMHO the stated future intent must outline and give details in regard to rebuilding of at least: the judiciary, the RTP and education, all with clear objectives and with a firm timeline.

Your IMHO has an authoritarian ring to it and will hold the country back for decades.  Remember, those who usurped power from the elected government will be held harmless inside of Thailand.  Outside Thailand may be a different matter.

Google (bless your pea pickin heart) on reconcile.   make (one's) peace, make up, kiss and make up, bury the hatchet, declare a truce. The only thing that registers with me  is bury the hatchet. I would not want to kiss the junta anywhere but they do have I think a part of their anatomy available. Kissing it would show homage.

Many South America countries like Argentina, Chile and Uruguay Mada reconciliation laws to prevent the military being judged once they left the power.  The mist important issue is that laws are often annulledby the civilian governments .

National reconciliation by force, that's what it means, and I'm sure it has never worked even one time

Oh for God's sake: who with even a single functioning brain cell can be bothered with all this tosh from a bunch of liars, psychos and autocrats. The last thing they want is genuine reconciliation. They only want power, power, power, and control - for themselves alone, in perpetuity  - and push all others with differing (i.e. the majority) viewpoint to the margins into powerlessness and servitude.

How anyone can believe even a syllable of this hypocritical claptrap from proven, fascistic liars is well beyond me ...
