Tourism industry needs smart management in several areas, Dusit head says

BANGKOK: -- THE THAI Tourism industry is on the right track but needs to be well managed in terms of infrastructure capacity, faster immigration processing and developing new tourist destinations, says the chairman of Dusit International.

Chanin Donavanik, chairman of Thailand’s leading hotel-chain operator, said yesterday that it was conceivable that the country would welcome between 34 million and 35 million foreign tourists this year.

“But the authorities should turn their focus on quality control and management both at the main international airports and at each tourist destination.”

Current airport capacity does not appear to be sufficient for the expected influx of international travellers. Chanin pointed to the newly opened terminal at Phuket International Airport as an example, as the airport hit full capacity from Day 1. Another example is Suvarnabhumi Airport, which exceeded its planned maximum capacity more than five years ago.

Won't Thailand 4.0 fix this?

These days it appears to me whenever I pass through Suvarnabhumi they still have the same number of immigration officers on duty as they did 5 years ago. Which has always been never enough!

Simply need more tourists not those fake ones on paper.

Cannot happen; no one is smart at TAT!

Frequent visitors to some airports in other parts of Asia never speak to immigration.  They have an instrument that allows them to pass through a gate that takes seconds.  Sadly Thai officialdom is all about control and has nothing to do with efficiency.

Tourist management 101: have some respect for your visitors whatever their means.

Thai immigration hinders the tourist indirectly as well as the TM30 on line reporting that those accommodating tourists use is down and there is no resumption of service to be seen. More time doing admin, less time looking after customers

The philosophy of the Sakdina state is that Thailand is doing tourists a favor by letting them come enjoy the country and sex trade, and they'd prefer tourists to stay home and just send money.

Being smart in Thailand at any position is totally irrelevant. Nepotism is all that is important in acquiring a high paying/prestigious position.

It is indeed discouraging that no one here at TV has put their hand up , so I guess I'll have to eat that humble pie and tell TAT I'm available., however like everything in Thailand it comes at a price , I charge a fee of  only a $120 usd an hour, must have guaranteed 12 hrs,  even though I'll only manage 2,  like the rest of the staff, and a car provided , it might seem like a high figure but this is what I used to get when I was in gold mining.........................................:cheesy:

Headline fixed.

Agree they need to be smart to deal with the ever increasing tourist needs, however as this is Thailand finding SMART people will be almost impossible and then to get the rest of the staff to comply would be nigh on impossible.

ERven TAT offices are unable to deal with foreigners properly , so no hope for the rest of the Tourism business.

developing new tourist destinations,

Just clean up and spruce up the old ones and things will be fine. Leave some pristine country for the rest of us to enjoy. I am tired of looking out the window and seeing a forest of cranes on the horizon.

Must .. build .. third .. runway

In July 2012 the AoT Board approved plans to build a third runway for completion in 2018. A third runway will enable BKK to handle up to 88 take-offs and landings per hour, up from 76 with the two existing runways both operating. The airport was already operating beyond its 45-million-passenger-per-year capacity. (link to publisher cannot be cited according to TV rules)

A new runway takes up to 6 years so looking at 2022 at the earliest. Until then Suvarnabhumi is likely to encounter (once again) operating issues  with the International Civil Aviation Organization (and/or the like) that can restrict further growth of flights, thus tourist arrivals.

I read somewhere in another thread that they will be taking advice from London's Heathrow airport. Seems that they are already doing that regarding hopeless delays and incompetence regarding management of airport capacity and future development.
