SYDNEY (Reuters) - American rock star Bruce Springsteen, who supported Hillary Clinton during the recent presidential election campaign, said on Sunday his band joins a global "new resistance" against U.S. President Donald Trump.

"It feels a long ways away, but our hearts and our spirits are with all the millions of people that marched yesterday, and the E Street Band, we are part of the new resistance," Springsteen told reporters in Perth, at the beginning of his Australian tour.

Trump's inauguration on Friday and his defiant pledge to end "American carnage" was followed by a weekend of mass protests across the United States and internationally.

Hundreds of thousands of people filled the streets of Washington and other capitals around the world on Saturday for "sister marches," mocking and denouncing the new U.S. leader the day after his inauguration.

Speaking before a 3.5 hour set at Perth Arena, Springsteen described Trump as a "demagogue", but added he hoped Trump's infrastructure programme succeeds in bringing jobs to places where layoffs have hit hard.

Since his inauguration, the Trump administration has reiterated plans to abandon an ambitious Asia-Pacific trade pact, the Trans Pacific Partnership, and renegotiate other trade deals.

Another star chiming in. The trouble with all this 'resistance' and carrying on like they're speaking for everyone is, they ain't. Millions of people voted the other way, remember Bruce, and (despite the Ruski hacking claims) he got in legitimately. Overlooking this and trashing the choice of others is just bad form.

Didn't stop the Trump campaign from using Springsteen songs at political gatherings (without permission, shocker) until ordered to cease and desist.

Or booking a Springsteen cover band to play the inaugural, until they dropped out.

Just get Toby Keith sober so we can hear what he has to say.

What justification is needed, have you ever heard the moron speak?

Yeah...I have!

Also seen him in concert 3 times!

a) he can speak whole sentences, in a manner, that does not remind the listener of a toddler. Something that the "tremendous" new POTUS really lacks!

b ) he does not lie, everytime he opens his mouth!

c) I have read his auto- biography! He can reflect on himself and his actions! Also something, the yuuuush leader of the free world is not really known for!

So...your point was...?

You mean the Russian hacking claims that Trump's spokesman now concedes are true?

These people are so funny, it is a joke a day.

Another quote devoid of any information. I won't say that the right wing posters are the only people to post things without intellectual content, but they certainly contribute more than their fair share.

When the U,S drives into civil war you now know who to blame. Madonna and Bruce Springsteen. They are whiny spoiled over privileged entertainers, they are not PHD grads with degrees in political science or at all. Why do these blind sheep keep following them??? Why not give the guy a chance so you have some examples on how he is a terrible president, not just because you don't like him. Future for the U.S looking very grim

The culture of celebrity believes that an outdated singer has merit and gravity in discussing politics...and he is an idiot because the very same culture of celebrity and cult of personality that makes Springsteen think he is politically relevant and informed is the SAME culture that elected Trump...Springsteen and other elites are clueless and out of touch...they force their opinions on everyone, and consider their ill informed opinions to be fact...citizens of the USA just got tired of being told they are racist, deplorable, and stupid by people who equate luck with knowledge and moral superiority...the election of Trump was a protest vote, and if singers and actors would just shut up and keep their stupidity to themselves, Trump would likely be a one term president...instead, if Trump fails, guess who he legitimately can blame?  The indulged Hollywood elite...

But a person who calls Bruce Springsteen an "idiot" without even offering a justification for it, is clearly not one.

The fact the a delusional pop musician, and presumable wannabee political groupie makes such a comment might be justification for considering him an idiot.

Whereas your apparent "anyone who has a different political view than yours" must be an idiot is just so typically PC and democratic of you.

He's a musician. Those who also support Hilary are showing what petulant self opinionated arrogant self righteous pompous twerps they really are.

Now, if the very dubious Mrs. Clinton had won, and Trump supporters were acting like this, those same hypocrites would be trying to shout them down, deny them their opinions and act like Stalinists.

Indeed. Amazing how many veteran entertainers, from all fields of entertainment, suddenly think they are the enlightened chosen ones politically. All rich champagne socialists who want you to share your wealth with others, but not themselves of course. They don't have to share because they're "special".

trump's inauguration speech was the worst in history. He enters office massively unpopular, representing a MINORITY of the American people, badly losing the POPULAR vote, with a large percentage of the people that voted for him even thinking his CHARACTER was UNFIT for the presidency.

It's all on trump.

A DECENT president would have bent over backwards and REALIZED how unpopular he is, and tried very hard to UNIFY.

trump did the exact opposite.

You talk about civil war. It's possible and if it happens it's all on trump and his core base supporters.

trump could actually fix this, but he won't.

He could send GARLAND up as his SCOTUS pick as it was DISGUSTING that the republicans didn't even debate and vote on him before.

He could propose single payer UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE and push for it's passage.

Doing those two things, explaining to his core base, yes I know not exactly what you wanted but I need to be president for ALL Americans, he could indeed potentially be one of the great presidents.

He will do the opposite. You can bet on that.

Hey, Bruce....You and HRC LOST....You are

supposed to give The New President a chance,

The American Way....

We're not "supposed" to do anything of the kind when a new president does NOT represent the majority with his policy agenda (if you can figure it out),

who comes into office with clear signs of MENTAL ILLNESS. (See trump's twitter history.)

That's the voice of authoritarianism. The USA is not (yet) an authoritarian state though clearly many core base trumpists want it to be. It is  not required to support a new president if he doesn't represent us and clearly goes into office with a severe mental disorder. The patriotic thing for so many of us is to work hard, starting now, to RESIST him in every way possible, including the effort that has already started to IMPEACH him.
