Bribers and takers to be named in the report

 

BANGKOK: -- THE NATIONAL Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) expected to receive details from the UK next week about its probe into bribes of more than Bt1 billion paid by aircraft engine-maker Rolls-Royce to Thai officials in connection with Thai Airways International (THAI)’s purchase of Boeing aircraft between 1991 and 2005.

 

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, who was also deputy premier in 2004 during the Thaksin Shinawatra administration, said he could not remember the details of Cabinet resolutions during that time concerning the approval for THAI to buy Rolls-Royce engines.

 

Isra News Agency reported that the Cabinet on November 23, 2004 approved a proposal submitted by Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit to buy 14 air planes for Thai Airways International at the price of Bt96.355 billion.

Looking at the diagram in the article, what a break for this military administration, they can hammer the Pheua Thai lot but no need to look into corruption during military, technocrat or Democrat administrations as the statute of limitations has expired.

 

However, this is always a degree of overlap between the two sides. Many politicians and business tycoons are opportunistic and simply join the side who is currently in charge. Prayut needs all the friends he can get.

 

So, it would be difficult for the current Prayut regime to isolate its enemies without collateral damage. So, probably nothing will happen. It will all fizzle out. Damage to the reputation of the country will be cited.

Rolls Royce bribery scandal probe to finish in 30 days

 

The minister of transport and the minister of energy yesterday instructed relevant government agencies to finish investigation into the briberies exposed by Rolls Royce within 30 days.

Their instructions came as Rolls Royce admitted of paying bribes to airline executives and politicians in many countries to get purchase contracts of their Rolls Royce engines, and Thailand was among the countries mentioned.

 

Energy Minister Gen Anantaporn Kanchanarat said that PTT Plc has also been implicated in the Rolls Royce bribery case with regard to the purchase of the company’s machineries used for energy exploration.

 

An investigative committee has been formed and he instructed it to present its findings within 30 days.

 

Meanwhile Transport Minister Akhom Termpitayapaisit also stated that he is awaiting the results of an internal Thai Airways Plc’s probe into the bribery charges.

 

He said THAI president Jarumporn Chotikasathien has been appointed to head the investigative committee and was also instructed to complete the probe within 30 days as well.

He was also in the Thaksin regime? What a political chameleon. He claims he does not remember. I guess the brain washing process went to far.

I'm wondering how long my response will last before being taken down. Chidchob is one of the money men of NE Thai politics. He was a leading player in the Thaksin governments. However, seeing which way the wind was blowing he threw in his lot with the Democrats and by all accounts spent considerably more money vote buying in the NE than the Thaksin forces in the last general election. Nevertheless his largesse was in vain; the Thaksin forces triumphed in the region, and Chidchob's party was reduced to a rump. It's a salutary tale for all those who believe that the only thing that matters in Thai politics is money, and the Thaksin parties only win because they spend the most money on vote buying. If you google "newin chidchob newmadala" you'll find plenty of reading matter

Yeah, there's two ways to buy votes from poor people. 1. give cash upfront. 2. promise more cash after election (rarely paid out)

Well, technically i think they were not promised cash, they were promised various populist things that would save them money,, like free healthcare and subsidies for rice etc and various other "schemes" i bet :D

Gee I read the word cash. And the other "schemes" like free healthcare sound realistic to me and the present "government" is subsidizing rice so technically I am OK with technical.

Yeah, there's a reason the red shirts wins every election here... it's because they focus on various schemes to help farmers etc... but hey... what choices do the farmers have here? Do you think they feel represented by the bangkok elite? Do you think the bangkok elite would care if they all starved to death?
