January 24, 20179 yr Andrew Nachemson Recently declassified CIA documents reveal that the agency had a less than flattering opinion of the late King Norodom Sihanouk, predicting that his vanity and pride would inevitably lead to the dissolution of his partnership with the Khmer People’s National Liberation Front (KPNLF). “He is still capable of pulling off one of his patented ‘grand gestures’ that could seriously complicate or even totally undermine ASEAN’s current Cambodia strategy,” a 1985 intelligence report reads. January 25, 20179 yr I'm guessing that Sihanouk didn't have a very high opinion of the CIA. Weren't they the ones that trained Pol Pot and his mates along of course with the Brits who weren't even supposed to be in the area. I had a mate in the forces who was a trainer. The US invasion of Cambodia resulted in vast loss of life, as do most of the other invasions by US forces. (Contrast the massive loss of life in Crimea following the Russian invasion there.)
January 25, 20179 yr Sihanouk was a patriot. He did what he could to maintain his country's sovereignty. It didn't always coincide with American interests so he became expendable. He walked a thin line between the US and China during the war which wasn't easy. The CIA has done more to screw up the world since WW II then any organization. Guatemala in 53, Iran in 54, Cambodia in 70, Chile in 72...the list goes on and on. Amazing that Chile made its way back to respectability. The others are still mired in poverty and/or disarray. The US official foreign policy is "Making The World Safe For Democracy". In reality, it is create chaos and division and keep them all fighting among themselves; chief proponent of this strategy being the CIA.
