A gunman unleashed chaos inside a Midtown Manhattan high-rise, leaving four people dead, including a New York City police officer. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, stormed the building with an MR rifle, sowing panic and fear among those present. The tragic incident concluded when Tamura took his life.

The attack occurred at the bustling 345 Park Avenue, home to major businesses like the National Football League and investment giant Blackstone. As the shooter made his way through the lobby and onto an upper floor, terrified employees and visitors scattered for cover, using furniture to barricade themselves in offices. Tragically, among those killed was Officer Didarul Islam, who was on security detail at the building at the time.

Authorities remain puzzled about Tamura's motive; however, they confirmed that he had a history of mental health issues. He had travelled from Las Vegas to New York City, stopping in several states along the way. Despite his East Coast journey, it's unclear if he had any connections to the city or the building where the shooting unfolded.

The rampage not only took the life of Officer Islam but also left three others dead and many fearing for their safety. Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the gunman randomly targeted individuals, sparing some while mercilessly shooting others. Law enforcement later discovered multiple rounds of ammunition in Tamura's BMW, parked outside the scene.

Officer Islam, hailed as a hero for his bravery during the assault, leaves behind a grieving family. A dedicated member of the force for three years, Islam's life was tragically cut short while he fulfilled his duties. His wife and two children, with a third on the way, now face a future without him.

The incident resulted in significant disruptions in Midtown Manhattan, with transportation and daily life coming to a standstill as police secured and cleared the area. Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes of evacuees with hands raised and bloodied individuals being assisted by emergency teams.

Local businesses, like Sip & Scoop, witnessed the chaos unfold. Employees and customers watched as police navigated the crisis, fervently hoping for a safe resolution.

As investigations continue, the city remains on edge, reflecting on the fragility of life and the unexpected violence that shattered an ordinary day.

Why does this sorta thing keep happening in gun-free zones?

One more data point that proves you don't mistrust CNN enough:

“You talk about a 44-story building…there were a few things that stood out there, among them, they do know what he looks like, sunglasses, mustache, possibly white,” CNN’s Erin Burnett said.

Here's a photo of the guy, who died at the scene.  So it's not as if there was a manhunt for a mystery shooter:

They need to put in the hard yards on COD - Advanced Warfare before buying a shooter at Walmart and heading out for some real-life action.

What’s a white dude.

Just now, Mike_Hunt said:

"White dude" is a colloquial term, often used informally, to refer to a man of European or Caucasian descent.

It's a casual way to describe someone's race or ethnicity, specifically their origin from Europe or regions with predominantly European ancestry.

While "white" is generally understood to refer to a skin color, it's also used as a broader racial classification.

Interesting?  🤔  Not a word about the "active shooter" in Or Tor Kor Market in Chatuchak, Bangkok yesterday. Five dead as well as the shooter who committed suicide.  I looked in the Thai News section of AN - not a peep. I'd link an article but can't remember which news agencies are not allowed on the site.

Mass shooting in NYC - it's on every world news outlet.
Mass shooting in Bangkok - "Ho hum."  🙄 Not news worthy.

I know. Sad.

It is quite the same thing when it comes to for example accidents. For instance, a train accident in a Western European nation that results in a dozen casualties gets a lot more media space in international media than a train accident in Africa or Asia that results in over a hundred casualties.

We can think of many other such examples.

Will this inequality change in the foreseeable future ? Sadly, most probably no.

And 81 killed in Gaza so far today with no story. Some people are more superior than others.

The grim milestone was reached on Tuesday, with medical sources telling Al Jazeera that at least 81 Palestinians, including 19 aid seekers, have been killed since dawn, despite “pauses” in fighting to deliver essential humanitarian aid.

FACT SHEET: President Trump Steals from Law Enforcement, Proposes Cutting Funds for Police in 2026

May 13, 2025

WASHINGTON — While President Trump and Republicans in Congress claim they support law enforcement, the Trump Administration’s actions tell a very different story. Instead of investing in law enforcement and our police officers, President Trump’s budget defunds public safety to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

A new fact sheet from House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) shows how President Trump’s budget proposal would reduce law enforcement funding by billions of dollars, pulling officers off the streets of the communities they keep safe. The fact sheet details how:

https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/trump-reverses-biden-directive-policing-reforms

Hours into his return to the Oval Office, President Trump revoked an executive order that aimed to “advance effective, accountable policing and criminal justice practices to enhance public trust and public safety.” But Trump did not just revoke many of his predecessor’s reforms — he also in the process reversed policies that he championed during his first term.

Trump budget defunds the police

White House budget slashes ATF funding by more than $400 million. “These mammoth law enforcement cuts will spur violent crime across the country.”

GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement responding to the Trump administration’s plan to slash law enforcement budgets across the Department of Justice.

As reported by Reuters, “The White House proposal calls for a roughly $1.2 billion budget for ATF in fiscal 2026, which would be down from its current funding level of about $1.625 billion…If enacted, that would be the agency’s lowest budget since at least 2016.” The proposal would “hamper [law enforcement’s] ability to carry out the Trump administration’s pledge to crack down on violent crime, three sources familiar with the matter said.”

Most law enforcement is covered by state & Local budgets.

His motives are obvious to anyone with half a brain. You don't just walk into Blackstone randomly.

Say it isn’t so.

Tamura was targeting NFL headquarters: Investigators believe that he was trying to target the headquarters of the National Football League, but took the wrong elevator, Mayor Adams said. A note found on his body suggested he had a grievance against the NFL over an unsubstantiated claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

He was blatantly mentally ill.

Many was the time I worked with a 1911 or a BHP in my top right hand drawer. For stuff like this.

Mr. Tamura shot himself in the chest, rather than the head.

“Study my brain please,” the note said. “I’m sorry.”

“The study” will only prove what we already knew.

He’s an imbecile.
