DDPM warns public against accidents during Chinese New Year festival

BANGKOK, 24 January 2017 (NNT) - Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) Director General Chatchai Promlert has warned citizens to be wary of fire hazards when engaging in Chinese New Year’s festivities.

The department head commented that many citizens of Chinese descent will perform traditional ceremonies on occasion of Chinese New Year, such as the burning of incense to honor their ancestors, the torching of money and gold effigies, and the lighting of firecrackers. He cautioned that such practices pose fire hazards and can lead to losses of life and property if not performed with caution.

He advised the public to be very careful when engaging in such rituals to avoid danger, recommending that the burning of any materials be done in a fireproof receptacle and that all incense or firecrackers be checked or extinguished after being lit.

He noted plugs should be removed from sockets and gas tanks and valves should be shut off after rituals are concluded.
