My spouse and I are American citizens, my spouse is also Thai.

We are re-locating to Thailand for an extended period of time and will stay with family. We each have a 1 year visa.

We would like information ie.. buying proterty, opening a business, work permits, residency....

Any info will be appreciated. Tks.

To be more specific, will I the non Thai be able to establish residency any easier, or start a small business? What about my Thai spouse?

Any info will be appreciated. Tks.

i would think if she enters thailand as an americian ...

all applicable laws should apply to her as an American citizen..

I'm not sure of all the rules but I do know the general rule about property is foreigners cannot own or buy property. If your wife gets a Thai ID card she can. I have heard of Thais born in the USA who's parents are Thai citizens getting ID cards.

Residency will probably take you a long time to get.

The generic answer to your somewhat generic question really is do a search of this forum. Most, if not all, of your questions have already been answered by Thaivisa members.

The search function is in the top right corner of this webpage. Click it and see what you can find. :o

Remember that you still have to file tax returns with the IRS. Your earned income (salaries, etc.) may be eligible for the foreign exclusion but you need to file returns to claim it. Even income earned in Baht from a Thai employer is subject to the US tax rules.

Before you leave the US she should contact Thai Embassy about getting a Thai Passport. Both US and Thailand allow dual citizenship.

Life will be much simpler in Thailand if she enters as a Thai and not American. Also would allow you to get 1 year extension of stay. The 1 year visa you both have will require you to leave every 90 days to get another entry stamp.

There is a tremendous amount of info on ThaiVisa if you search for it. Many of us have wives and kids which are dual citizens. As suggested, your wife should get a Thai passport. As an American, and this is important, she should always enter and leave the US using her American passport. As a Thai, it is better if she enters and leaves Thailand on her Thai passport. She should never use her Thai passport for the US. When she leaves Thailand, she would leave on her Thai passport and when she enters any other country, other than the US, it would be up to her as to which passport she uses. Many use their Thai passports in Asia, and their other passport outside of Asia.

Yes generic question but hoping for someone to read this message who has experienced the same circumstance. I should have entered that as the topic. A lot of good info here, but most needs to be checked out and verified. I could not find what I needed on any gov sites where all information is valid.

btw. Spouse has expired Thai Passport that can be stamped a-new and no more visa applications.
