You just watch. He will get off lightly  in Japan and return to his relatively lofty civil service position.

OK, lets see.

BTW, Khamronwit's case is completely  different. He --by suppose oversight-- extended his  official job, which lawfully permits him and obliges him carrying a gun, into another jurisdiction and therefore made it technically a crime.  Suphat's job in Thailand is not stealing low valued items, which he just happened to continue over in Japan. In fact his job is to protect the country the against some form of theft.

If these allegations are true, he's finished. If he can retain all of pension benefits, which are due to start this year, needs to be seen. If he has powerful "friends" in is own ministry than this will be a strong factor among other things that could save him against the all the odds. MFA staff, like the rest of the people in this country certainly see him as a national embarrassment.

Clean record means he has not been caught before. It was just souveniring, no real harm done.

Because if I steal something and pay the fine in Japan its done.. this guy is getting (maybe) extra punishment.. so how much extra is justified ?

It does show something about his character, you don't want people with morals like that in government functions.

I agree on all points...he did the crime, and did the time..(so to speak),
BUT .....the position he holds in public office....

What would be a fitting extra penalty? Hard to say, I would guess it depended upon governmental policies, (if any in Thailand) addressing this matter.

Nonetheless, The man has had plenty of time alone banged up, to ponder on the stupidity of his actions and effect, I guess that alone has been horrific torment.

This also play out at an international level. If he is not punished someway here in Thailand the Japanese (most countries) will see that (up to a point) as a disrespect for their country.

Paying fines is enough. The public embracement and loss of face is sufficient.

He will never take hotel towels/paintings/soap and shampoo again. Enough.

ive  found  they  generally "dont  learn"

petty theft... he will be let off with a small fine and a massive loss of face. lol

I'm just waiting for the defamation of character card to be played (to who I have no idea) to make things all go away.

The rumours I have heard are that the Embassy are pushing hard for the Japanese to take a lenient view and allow him to leave Japan asap. The Embassy was emboldened by the success they had pressuring the Japanese in the Khamronwit Thoopkrachang case.

There you go. Told ya.

Briggsy! What're you on about?

Bloke gets arrested on Tuesday for petty theft (5000 THB), reaches a private settlement with claimant, and gets released  Friday. Hardly that the state prosecutor is going to insist to bring this to court or a foreign state needs to interfere.

Anyone with a bit of brain (may not have been there in the first place, but) would  definitely have been released within 24 hours from remand custody.
