Trip to Laos

Featured Replies

Hello all,

In April this year I am planning to drive to the Friendship Bridge Laos/ Thai border from Surin, leave my car on the Thai side and rent a driver and 12 seat van and be driven around Laos for about 1 week.

Luckily, my Thai wife speaks fluent Laos so communicating will be so much easier. However, I would like some independent input from readers. Maybe I have been looking in the wrong Forum, but I can't find any info.

So, the question is.... Has anybody done a trip to Laos? If so, I would appreciate your advice.

Your experience re cost of Van and driver hire per day and any of your recommendations.

Any other pertinent information, your personal experiences there, and anything else that would make this trip easier.

Thanks.... Haso

I think you'd be better off getting the van in Vientiane.  Probably much cheaper and with a driver who knows the area better.  I would guess most hotels/guesthouses can help you get this organized.

why not just drive ur thai car into Laos? very easy to do,
get ur cars passport at the vehicle dept , get stamped out of Thailand and get a temp export paper, enter laos, stamped in, buy insurance and ur on ur way, most roads are good,  expect those north of Luang Prabang.towards Luang Namtha ( very potholed )

no need to hire a car/driver!!

I Have driven around Laos a few times....Good to enter at one border and exit at another if u wish

phuketrichard...thank you for your advice And info. There will be about 6 other persons with us. We all have thai cars but they are concerned about driving on the other side of the road. Me..no problems, part of the adventure and a lot cheaper. maybe do it alone next time. cheers Haso.
