And so he should be freed, do the Japanese not know "who he is". They clearly have been under the misapprehension that he was just a jumped up theiving little self important nobody.

What a mistake to make.

An agreement was reached with the hotel on how much compensation was to be paid. They said that once that was agreed, prosecutors would recommend dropping the case.

A thieving Thai AND he's in politics? What's this world coming to?

Not much difference to cheaters being law enforcers...a trait that has infected the bone marrow of the body...

Amazing that his name still hasn't been released 'officially' in Thailand. Says a lot about privilege and corruption, for those on the correct side.

(Yes, his name has filtered out locally, from sources in Japan. I assume defamation suits will be forthcoming for anyone who printed his name?)

Meanwhile some poor sap gets 11+ years from a Military Tribunal for two (2) internet posts, and his mom will probably get some jail time for saying "Huh?".

Remains in the same post, does not transfer, collects all retirement options, would it be any other way....Is praised as an object of spin control.   Thainess of forgiveness...chaching.

Thieving Thai? As stated.

Politician? NO. Surprising? Yes.

"Mr Suphat Sa-nguandeekul, deputy director-general of the Department of Intellectual Property, was accused of stealing three paintings worth 15,000 yen from a hotel he stayed in Kyoto. The paintings were found in his luggage when he checked out of the hotel." (Thai PBS)

Not a political position, so it is more surprising given his status in the DIP.

I'll bet they have a jolly good look in his "carry on bags" when he poles up at the airport for his flight home!

pathetic

what happened to the rule of law

Well now this will definitely send a message to all Thais that breaking the law is perfectly acceptable in Japan. Though I wonder if the Thai populace will accept the fact that Thai language is not the globally used language there yet.

Spent some time recently learning from the great number of replies on this case, and how different this guy's treatment is going to be in Japan compared to if it was in thailand. In Japan he was going to get into real trouble.Jail time was a certainty as the Japanese justice system does not differentiate poor from the rich.He committed a crime and will certainly have to pay for what he did. Well he probably(or almost certainly) PAID for it.As for the rest of it ------------

Yes. He's probably nicked the towel, pillow case and toilet roll from his cell.

(everything else is bolted down)

Not only that, but Thai press keep saying 'alledged' theft. Nothing alledged about it. He was caught stealing. He's a thief.

Wrong. He is thai. He knows all complex things such as thainess, face, grenjai, jaidee, etc. Us earthworms cannot understand such superior creatures with extremely refined ethics and customs
