Schulz: “a stronger Europe means a stronger Germany”

BERLIN: -- The man nominated to lead Germany’s centre-left Social Democrats into the country’s upcoming election met the press in Berlin on Monday.

Martin Schulz, the small-town mayor from west Germany who rose to become president of the European Parliament, said he wants to learn “the immediate worries and needs of the people in the country”, in order “to alleviate these worries.”

The vote

Members of the Social Democratic Party’s national executive agreed unanimously on Sunday to make Schulz their candidate for the chancellorship, a post that traditionally goes to the party which receives the greatest share of votes in a general election.

The executive’s decision needs to be confirmed at a party convention on March 19, when the 61-year-old also is expected to become party leader.

What Schulz said

During the news conference Schulz also emphasised that the only common sense answer to the developments in the United States is a strengthened Europe.

“A strengthened EU is the best way to protect the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany, which makes sense as a response to what is developing in the US. I would like to achieve social justice through a combination of the distribution of justice and investment policy.”

What the polls say

Polls put Schulz’s popularity close to that of Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is running for a fourth term in the September 24 vote.

What he really means is that Germany will be able to control Europe this time without guns and planes, like the other two attempts. Shultz is a horrible politician and serves his own and the elite self interests. hopefully the German people will send him packing in the election.

Sadly they have to chose between him or Merkel. It's always the Social Democrats or Christian Democrats who provide the Chancellor.

Both are self serving professional politicians who represent the elite. Both see Germany as ruling the EU. What a choice!

My late father always said that should Germany ever reunite, he passed away before the Berlin wall fell and reunification, that given the chance they'd be up again. Now they've realized that military wise, it wouldn't be third time lucky. But the EU, the rise of federalist politicians and bureaucrats who couldn't care less what the electorate want, and the development of the Euro has provided them with a new route.

With Britain gone, assuming that will happen, and France really being of little consequence, Germany will dominate. Interesting to see how many Germans will fill key positions going forward. And whose pushing for a EU army? And guess where they want the HQ?

Most Germans, IME, are decent intelligent caring people who don't want to dominate anyone or go back to how things were. But they best get a grip on their politicians who plan to rule rather than serve.
