THE GOVERNMENT expects to be able to clear out its entire rice stockpile of 8.01 million in the first half of this year, beginning with a big lot of 2.87 million tonnes of rice suitable for consumption put up for auction on February 16.

The remaining 5.2 million tonnes will only be supplied to non-food and feed meal industries including the energy sector, as this rice is of poor quality. It will go on the block next month.

5million tons of animal feed...20 ton goes in a big truck i guess so that makes  250.000 big trucks full of rice are going to be wasted....

What? Not enough rice sold online direct from farmers to consumer? Yingluck stopped selling rice on the street? Surely both things could have cleared out stocks.

Yes indeed.

Rice farmers received over 515 billion baht for pledged rice from 2011-2014 instead of a market price that was at least half the government payment.

Fair play when the current government shifts the rice and reduces the storage charges can only be good for Thailand. I think they may well deserve the additional 13.5 billion baht for the submarine.
