Officials enact readiness measures for drought and forest fires

THAILAND, 8 February 2017 (NNT) - Thai officials are working with the agricultural sector to implement readiness measures for the upcoming drought, while the Pollution Control Department has lent support to the northern provinces to address poor air quality due to forest fires.

Farmers in Nakhon Ratchasima province have agreed to refrain from off-season rice planting after a report that water levels in Lamtakong Dam were insufficient for agricultural activities.

In Phrae province, Sung Men District Office has coordinated with the 12th Cavalry Squadron and local residents in deploying sandbags in the Yom River to accumulate water for consumption and agricultural activities during the upcoming dry season.

In Sukhothai province, the local Peace and Order Maintaining Command has coordinated with local authorities and residents in constructing a minor dam in Mueang Kao subdistrict. Officials held a ceremony to hand over the minor dam to the residents.

Meanwhile, the Pollution Control Department has held a seminar for representatives from nine northern provinces to discuss joint efforts in addressing smog from forest fires. The department revealed that it will make air quality data available to the local provinces and dispatch officials to survey air quality throughout the region.

As I gaze into my crystal ball I see countless opportunities for a multiplicity of committees and sub-committees. Drought committees, smoke committees, fire committees etc; also water committees (should there be insufficient  of those already).

The population of Nakhon Si Thammarat will have week long celebrations to learn about the well spend money on committees and sub-committees chatting in posh resorts about drought.

as we see so often in this forum, Thai expertise seems to be more about RE-enactment with lots of pointing and blaming. I await the re-enactment.
