Commerce Ministry set to propose modified retail and wholesale bill to Cabinet

BANGKOK: -- THE COMMERCE MINISTRY will this month again try to propose the draft Retail and Wholesale Business Act for Cabinet’s approval, with the aim of controlling aggressive expansion of hypermarkets and protecting local businesses under the spectre of globalism.

Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn said that the move came after the National Legislative Assembly ordered the ministry to propose a modified version of the original draft act for Cabinet ratification before it was passed to Parliament for endorsement.

Thailand has tried several times to pass a retail bill since 2001 but all efforts failed because of the long process of adjustment and disagreements among involved parties.

So much for preparing to meet global competition.

Foreign businesses stay out of Thailand. Do not invest in the Thai marketplace.

This time around they will do it anyway because the junta is in charge and they can do whatever they want. Regardless of what the differing parties or anyone else desires or thinks.

Beg to differ. The junta government will not do anything to upset the honey pot. Hypermarkets equate to wealthiest and are rich source of income. Local businesses are small and too many and cumbersome to derive the income. Really no monetary incentives to help the small retailers. Expect the bill to go nowhere and will be returned back to the vault for keeps.

Not sure curbing hypermarkets is the way to go, as most Mom and pop stores buy from them.

Better to curb the abundance of 7/11s.

Where I live there are 4 of them within 200 square metres.
