What is your nationality

For most Europeans, UK, ND US nationals it is not a Visa on Arrival but a visa exempt entry that you get for a 30 day stay.

This is not only a name, but you can extend it at your local immigration for an additional stay for a 1900 Baht  added on to the original 30 day entry.

This can not be done with a true visa on arrival which is NOT free and which costs 1000 Baht at the airport, and can not be extended.

Just so you know the difference between the two.

But yes, you can live wherever you choose.

The law requires a TM 30 to be registered within 24 hours of arrival at an address.
If you have no reason to visit immigration, then you may get away without registering. Just keep under the radar.

Told this to my in law and she said immi and cops can f off 55555

Absolutely understandable attitude, no normal Thai wants to get involved with police, and neither should we. Reporting to Police up-country is a very bad idea and I think that is why the Immigration Act leaves the enforcement of 37(2)(3) up to the Chief of Police.

How long you can stay depends on your citizenship. Most westerners 30 days.

You can obtain a tourist visa and stay longer. Sixty days with the option of a 30 day extension while here. If you go the latter route I'd advise your GF or whom ever owns the residence where you are staying to file a TM30 within 24 hrs. It is enforced at least in Chiang Mai. I found out when filing for an extension . My wife paid the small fine of 1600 Baht.

The fact that somebody is asking this question speaks volumes about the current state of Thailand.

Somebody is arriving in the country as a tourist and would like to stay at his fiance's apartment but first, just to be on the safe side, he's checking to see if this is prohibited.

Absolutely unbelievable what's going on here these days.

Visa on arrival? Or visa exempt? Either way, if it's her address you have given on the TM6, no problem.

Reckon you are wrong . Thai law states that you have to confirm your address of residence within 24 hours to the nearest immigration office , no exceptions . Hotels will take your p/p or xeros them despite what you write on the arrival card and that action negates the need to go to immigration . In the northeast they will hit you for 800 baht to start with and up depending on the length of stay unreported if they choose to invoke the law and I know several farangs that were hit including myself . Thats when staying in private accommodation .                                                                         unless you know better

No it doesn't. The Owner or house-master or possessor or hotel manager has to report that a foreigner is staying at their address.

No it doesn't. That is to fulfil the hotels obligation to report that a foreigner is staying at their hotel.

They can only do that if they consider the foreigner is the owner or possessor of the property and no one has submitted a TM.30 report.

ok , item 1 , do you agree that the foreigner's place of lodging has to be reported within 24 hours ?

item 2 , the reporting by the hotel manager , as an authorised user of the immigration internet system , of the foreigners stay will negate the need for the foreigner to report to immigration within the 24 hours

item 3 , I stand by my statement as this has occurred several times to friends and myself . Now whether the fine was against the householder or visitor is another thing because of not speaking Thai and only aware of the outcome and that was the fine .

So getting back to the poster , he has to report to the nearest immigration office within the province , if there is not one he reports to the police . Now I think we all know that 999 times out of 1000 non reporting from a private residence would not be a problem , however the law is there and if they choose to hit you they can .

A complete change of immigration officers down my neck of the woods seemed to have sparked this , new broom scenario I think .
