BANGKOK: -- The State Railway of Thailand plans to phase out 18 trains out of a total of 181 and to readjust train operating timetables as part of the organizational restructure to improve operational efficiency and services.

Informed SRT sources said that the 18 trains to be phased out include four south-bound trains, four north-bound trains, two northeastern-bound trains and 10 suburban trains.

The sources explained that the trains to be phased out are trains which have low load factor such as suburban trains which have passengers below 50 percent of their capacities.

The timetable adjustments will involve trains which operate on daily basis and they will be put into services on Fridays and weekends, said the sources, adding that the restructuring will enable the SRT to replace old carriages which need repairs with those which are in good conditions.

Or perhaps just reduce the number of carriages, on those lesser-used services ? :whistling:

there is probably very little difference in operating costs by having less carriage space

so no saving there

We have train tracks and one train scheduled everyday but the mayor industry (soybean cooking oil) here (Sukhothai) gets all its soybeans from import via Bangkok harbor transported by truck (at least 10 -20 truck loads a day) and nothing by train because it's to expensive!? Shouldn't 1 or 2 trains transporting 1-200 containers half the way across Thailand be cheaper than sending 1-200 containers by truck each week!?

Not suggesting there would be any saving, but it would enable some old carriages to be taken out-of-service for repair, without reducing the passengers' opportunities to travel.

Reducing an already-poor service does nothing to encourage people to use trains for transport, instead of buses or cheap-flights.

Probably why the trucks are in disrepair and the drivers dangerous
