PHUKET:-- A cargo boat capsized and sank in rough rough water and strong currents off Koh Gai (Chicken Island) this afternoon.

The boat, named Chok Suthida 2, left Jian Wanich pier in Phuket at 8:40am to deliver supplies and daily usage items to hotels on Phi Phi.

A Thai captain and Burmese crew member were the only ones on board. They were thrown into the water when the boat overturned.

Keeping a boat in a good condition is more time consuming than what is required for a motorbike or auto so that we hear of boats sinking on a frequent basis does not surprise me in the least. Not sure why current would be mentioned unless it took the boat onto a hard rock,  a high wave should have been sighted and the boat steered to handle it. I do not recall a warning to stay off the water due rough seas. But there may ba a very logical reason for the sinking of chok suthida 2. As the man said ''up jumped the devil'' hope the same fate was not responsible for this being number 2.

I thought Koh Gai was in Krabi not Phuket.

And, that would be a long way off the route from Phuket to Phi Phi.

Looking at the pics, in those seas, there's no way a wave would have capsized that boat if driven properly. Perhaps the heavy fuel drums in the bow unbalanced it, or the helm was left unattended causing a sudden change of direction, or it's just an old boat that popped a plank.

Koh Gai (actually called Koh Poda Nok) is way off the route from Phuket to Phi-Phi. being 2/3rds of the distance from Phuket to Phi-Phi further on.

Sea conditions between Krabi and Phi-Phi were good with no heavy seas, though there were gusts of strong wind as showers passed through the area.

Just as Thailand ignores road-worthiness for cars they regard maintenance on working boats as optional.

From the second pic in the gazette, it looks like they put everything "On" the boat instead of "In" the boat perhaps raising the center of gravity and causing a capsize.

There's no way those seas pictured would capsize a boat under normal circumstances. There has to be more to this story.

According to the other news source it sunk close to Koh Kiaw. Green Island, which is much more on the way. The captain has declared the boat already had a crack, and when a big wave hit the crack got bigger and let in water.

On the upside, the cargo was rescues so not left out on sea.
