BANGKOK: -- Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan has sent a signal to the Royal Thai Navy to submit to the cabinet this month its proposal to purchase a submarine from China otherwise it will miss out from the deliberations of this fiscal year’s budget.

An informed defence source said that the cabinet are scheduled to meet twice, February 21 and 28 this month and any project for the cabinet’s approval is not submitted within this month will not be included in this year’s budget.

The RTN has shown interest in acquiring the S26T type of submarine from China estimated to cost 13 billion baht each.

I thought the trough was down to 25%.  The military government still wants it's toys before the election.  What are they going to do with the rusting aircraft carrier they have never used

Posted

We do not care if we bankrupt the country.

We only care about getting the boys some new toys to play with.

If you want an example of how to waste money look at the aircraft carrier that we cannot afford to put to sea.

Cannot afford to buy aircraft for.

What the hell, nobody can stop us, we have article 44, to use if and when the mood strikes  :partytime2::partytime2:

There are plenty of better things, which benefit the people and country more, to spend this money on IMO.

And the RTN just got their six new patrol-boats, which are better-suited to their needs anyway.

Just to point out, in the interests of accuracy, that the carrier has been used a little bit,  mainly for rescue-operations after floods and the tsunami.

She entered service just as the Asian financial-crisis hit, which is partly why her secondhand-aircraft weren't maintained properly, and quickly became unserviceable.

But her main use these days seems to be as a domestic tourist-attraction,  a waste-of-money indeed.

No fun to be had by the RTN boys with an aircraft carrier that has no aircraft. Given budget limitations this could end up being the submarine with no torpedoes. It's tactical maneuvers will probably be confined to cruising submerged up and down the tourist beaches with periscope up looking for illegal sand beach beds, umbrellas and vendors while being a navigation hazard for jet skis.

Ultimately it might be more cost-effective if they just paid themselves their "skim", and used the remaining money for something which at least benefits even the wealthy or middle-class?

Pawtwit would be struggling with the spelling let alone the acquisition, he'd be also struggling to give a true and factual account of the correspondence between the RTN, himself and China...............................:cheesy:.

RTN all abuzz and flustered:

A plan? We need a plan? What's that all about? Something in writing? Is there a form for that? Why can't we just post it on Facebook? OK, OK, everybody just calm down..., now, who has the nicest handwriting?

Thailand has 9 frigates, 7 corvettes and 32 patrol vessels. Adding a couple of subs is not a bad idea.

Those who mock Thailand for wanting to have subs could also ask why tiny Singapore, surrounded by very shallow waters, has 4 modern subs and will have 6 in 2020. It is because in time of war subs are essential for a navy. They can be used in deep enemy waters for surveillance and information gathering, communication data, landing of special operations forces (ex: UK SAS), protection of task forces and merchant shipping, denial of sea areas to an enemy, destroy enemy ships and disrupt their merchant shipping etc...

Sounds like someone's been watching those WWII submarine movies again.

The only enemy of the Thai military seems to be Thai people that don't agree with junta rule. A sub is not required to repress student uprisings.

Singapore has a lot more money for frivolous toys like sub marines.

3,500 army and police personnel who can't find a monk. Like someone mentioned before - the biggest threat to Thailand is Thailand.

You are right about the subs, but the frigates and corvettes could be used to shell Thammasat university campus from offshore.:saai:

Speechless just unbelievable. Hold their hand through the whole process.

Really!!! First they have to be manned outfitted with armament fueled (this could be a stumbling block) now we are out in the water. All that you propose seems to be well above their pay grade here.

What a total waste of money Better spent on the poor or on mental health or even for the homeless

Or provide a subsidy for the farmers

Just spend it on something that is a social service to help everyone here in Thailand

It is beyond me to find the words that will express how I feel about a submarine for Thai society

This is just a toy for the military and will not serve any real purpose  Better by more border patrol boats instead

I suppose a submarine could be used to monitor dissident student beach parties...

Although it is more likely to end up as a fender to stop the aircraft carrier banging up against the dock wall.

I wonder how many Thai sailors will be interested in serving on a submarine maintained by Thais. I hope the sailors develop gills.
