Ya Ba brought to temple to "make merit" as soldiers bust three day drugs, booze and sex party at two temples

SUPHANBURI: -- Soldiers in Suphanburi have raided two temples and arrested six monks after they were found boozing, taking amphetamines, watching porn videos and playing cards.

 

The monks claimed the drugs were brought in by a layman and accepted as part of merit making, reported Thairath .

 

The two temples raided were Wat Phan Tamlung in Don Kamyan sub-district and Wat Nong Kham in Sanam Khli sub-district. The raids followed complaints by the public.

 

At the first temple the raiding party found Ya Ba equipment and a huge stack of porn CDs. All monks had their urine tested and four came up purple indicating drug use. These were monks aged 24, 47 and 55.

 

They were handed over to the abbot and immediately taken for defrocking.

 

At Wat Nong Kham the soldiers knocked on the door of the monks' quarters and found a midday drugs and booze party in full swing with monks and lay people in attendance.

 

They found a quantity of Ya Ba and drug taking paraphernalia. There were also empty booze bottles scattered throughout the premises. Three monks tested positive for drug taking and were defrocked and sent for criminal prosecution thereafter.

 

The monks said the lay people had brought the drugs in to the temple to offer to them. Such practice is known as merit making in Thailand.

 

All monks concerned said the drugs and booze parties had been raging for three days.

 

Playing cards were also found and taken into evidence along with the drugs and porn CDs.

I think you will find that drugs are not included on the list of commodities normally donated for making merit.

I knew what i would choose if i were a Thai 

 

What a shame, and this is the 3rd or 4th temple in a few weeks where they found yaba.. My mother in law still cooks for the monks at 4 am, every day.

I do hope that the military will continue to take charge and raid all the illegal activities that the police were getting kick backs from.

So all the bad boys that ends up as monks to "heal their bodies" will continue their lifestyle inside the temple.  Just a waste of time then. 

 

Doesn't anyone think it's nice to see such devout revered people trying desperately to keep in touch with the common herd and their daily concerns?   The roman catholic church has been unable to attract young girls into nunneries for some years now - nuns are becoming extinct. Drug and gambling rooms in the convents could become powerful recruitment enticements.Thai religious philosophies and principles might well be considered among the most progressive in the modern western world.

Watching videos does NOT constitute a 'sex party'.   That usually involves a lot of heterosexual activity.

Guess you have never heard what goes on in temples and churches where a bunch of dudes live together?

It some countries non monks do a runner from justice and become monks then carry on as before so sex parties, drugs and rock and roll not surprised to see it going on a way of life for some

Not Monks fault, layman brought the Ya Ba and booze to temple to make merit. Made monks play cards and watch porn CD's then preform Sex act. Then Army arrives and cuts party short 

I think it very likely that these errant monks are what I refer to as "short-time" monks, meaning they have been through a ceremony ( I believe the word might be something like "buat"?) and they spend a few weeks or months in the wat. most Thai men pass through this at one time in their lives, many use it as a get out of jail card.

Far less career devoted monks indulge in this less than righteous behaviour, although there are always exceptions.. 

However, the whole Buddhist faith seems to be in some disarray when for example it takes hundreds of soldiers and police to simply arrest and charge a senior monk at Wat Dhammakaya in Pathum Thani. It seems not a week goes by without reports of monks misbehaving showing up in the media.

This is funny! Sounds like something Woody Allen would say.

My wife thinks I'm missing something spiritual and said I  should have become a novice monk for a while like most Thai men. 

I now think she's right where do I sign up? 

So is/is not the path to enlightenment paved with booze bottles, decks of cards, porno CDs, drug paraphernalia, lustful thoughts? Wouldn't be hard to market that religion.

Thai Buddhism is proving itself to have lost it's way, day after day after day.

Many smaller temples do not have an abbot in residence.

So who is in charge at the smaller temple... who teaches the novice monks about the religion and what to do?

 

Surely a small temple can not just compose of a few complete novice monks with no one looking over them?

 

 

It seems to me like a Buddhist version of Father Ted is long overdue in Thailand. It could be set on Phuket,  in a small forest wat with a bunch of dysfunctional monks of little faith getting up to the kind of exploits these dudes were busted for. It would bound to be a blockbuster series on Channel 7, and make a refreshing change from the endless rich & poor know their place, marry-your-rapist,  crazy female histrionics at the slightest excuse, lazy stereotypical ethnic group representations, poor acting and Bangkok-centric soaps. And of course, the star of the show would be constantly drunk, tab-smoking, yaa-baa popping, football betting, leching old monk in his 80s who swore and belched like a trooper and never missed a trick.

What would be the Thai catchphrase equivalent of "Feckit!" I wonder?

Making merit by bringing monks drugs, booze and porn? Priceless.

Well I don't know about novices. AFAIK for a temple to have official wat status there must be at least 5 monks in residence with an abbot. Most of the many temples in the Pai valley that I have visited do not meet this requirement, but the monks have all been old veterans rather than novices.
