yes I know there are lotsssss of hotels there and I think thats exactly the problem for me! so thought Id ask here, if people can recommend some places?

criteria:

clean/newish

small is fine

cheap :D something around the 30-40USD a night?

Im travelling by myself..so really prefer a place thats not extremely busy with roudy young tourists if thats possible :D nothing against young rowdy tourists, but as a female traveller on my own just dont want hassle with boys :o I dont mind crowds around me..as long as each keep to themselves :D

thanks for all suggestions :D

hi mig. i used to stay at a great little place called Su's 2. its on rum jungle road and isnt too far from the night action.

rooms are air conditioned, have hot water, they have a small swimming pool, lovely staff, security, and the rooms are serviced every day.

you will need to find the phone number, but if you cant, send me a pm and i will see what i can do for you.

From what you say, Kuta doesn't really sound like the ideal place for you. It is (many light years away and in another dimenssion), like Pattaya in Thailand.

Have you considered the Seminyak or Sanur areas? Specially the first one has a lot of action going on... if you feel like joining in. Both not far from Denpasar, and also close to Kuta if you want to check it anyway.

hi Donna and besth

thanks for your suggestions. now I have a confession i havent done much research on bali at all. thought about it last night...went online this evening and booked my flight....then did a search for hotels...and there comes hundreds of names :D

i thought kuta only cos thats the name that comes first to mind when thinking of bali.....i do like the convenience of things...and am just gonna chill, relax..enjoy the scenic ...but yeh u might be right...being the christmas period it COULD be very busy...Ill check out seminyak and sanur....

donna I did try search for Su's cottage...and found some pics

no contact details though :-S

hmmm and a friend is kinda deciding if she wanna join me..so if she does i might have to upgrade a lil bit :D shes bit more fussy than me. i hear u ask theres more :o yes Im really not that bad :D

and yes i know Im just talking a lot of nonsense now......

thanks again to the 2 of you...more suggestions are always appreciated :D

We stayed in Kuta last year, 2 days after the second bombings.

Nice place.

Have to disagree with the poster who said its like Pattaya. I didnt find that. Its MUCH more familly orientated, though of course there are a lot of young Ozzies there too. We didnt see any girlie type bars and i was more than happy to take my thai girlfriend into any of the bars there.

We booked a hotel from the counter at the airport. It was 800 b a night but i cant remember the name of it. It was smallish, convenient for everything, price included breaky, it had a nice pool set in nice gardens. we only intended staying a couple of nights and finding something cheaper - but we had a good look around and could find cheaper but not better.

People were very friendly, prices about the same as Thailand.

In saying that, i wouldnt go again. I live in Phuket and it was almost the same. So bit of a waste of money from that point of view!

Good luck and enjoy your holiday

I stayed at Kuta but just can't think of the name of the hotel, so useless for that. I just wanted to warn you to be sure to use a pretty heavy sun tan lotion while there. I got the worse sunburn of my life and I was just walking a couple of kms on the beach without my shirt and it was OVERCAST! Woke up the next morning and it felt like a thousand needles were being stuck in me, my feet turned purple. So take care and have a good time, beautiful place to go. And I agree, not Pattaya like.

Kuta is absolutely nothing like Pattaya... don't worry! It is quite busy at times though but if you stay further north along the beach it's a s quiet as you want.

Bali is a great place, make sure you check out Ubud as well, just a beautiful town!

I've stayed in a lovely bungalow park in Legian, a little more west of Kuta.

It has various types of bungalows and the tropical setting is just amazingly beautiful and very quiet -also with swimmingpool-. It's 5 mins from the beach. In fact, when you cross the street you can enter a back-gate of a large hotel, walk through (just enjoy their large swimmingpools!) and go for the beach :o

Better not pre-book as Bali is very very quiet now, I just heard, and you can book a nice room/bungalow for a lot less than suggested at the websites.

Have a nice trip.

awwww thanks people :o for all the suggestions

usually if i were by myself I woudnt worry too much about pre-booking. but my friend in the last minute decided to join me :D and shes a bit more fussy hehe and yes more than me :D

i did some more checking around of the hotels and beaches...and yes a few in legion seem nice...also seminyak (sp?)

besth..I did also look at Sanur...but decided Id take a morning trip there instead..it sounds really nice and calm and peaceful...but i still need the liveliness

laopo...not sure if its gonna really be quiet? cos all flights going in from jakarta to bali are very full though

anyway thanks people...will let you know how it went..meantime suggestions still always welcome :D

and good to know it wont be anything like pattaya..that had me worried for a bit..reading the websites show all beaches to be really nice though

other thing is...now my family starting to worry about it being christmas and the bomb and terrorist and stuff.....so am hoping to stay safe :D

ok quick report....I made it there and back

stayed at Legion. the beach was quieter than Kuta main (which reminds me of Patong)

was a short visit so didnt get to too many places..mostly just relax in the hotel, enjoy the nice food and the beach..a sunset on the cliff and local dance

even managed a night out on the town near seminyak....they have Huu Bar there..same chain as the one in bkk, but more happening in bali. big place...with good music, crowds...but also an outdoor patio that is quite romantic :D

kinda strange though..there was traffic in all of main Kuta grrrrrrr!!! (might have something to do with the narrow streets?) but restuarants were mostly empty.....do people not eat?? hmmm

anyway thanks again to everyone :o
