Dhammakaya Supporters Defy Order to Leave; DSI to Withdraw Forces

Dhammakaya monks address their supporters via loudspeakers just outside Wat Dhammakaya on Sunday.

 

PATHUM THANI — The deadline for non-resident monks of the controversial Dhammakaya Temple to leave the premises by 3pm Sunday came and went without any attempt made by the authorities to enforce it.

 

In fact, the Department of Special Investigation, or DSI, which issued the order just several hours ago, said it will begin to pull back its forces from the perimeter around the sect’s headquarters in Pathum Thani following clashes with worshipers and monks who not only refused to leave the premises as instructed, but also rushed into the temple in droves.

 

“There were minor confrontations between people and officials on duty in the areas,” DSI spokesman Woranan Srilam told reporters Sunday afternoon.

Throw in the Krabi coal plant protesters and the Junta is definitely on their back-foot.

 

Of course, this is when they usually do something very stupid, like murder their own citizens, so let's hope someone has Prayut and Prawit on a very short leash.

It appears that the only people left in Thailand who will stand up in large numbers to the junta, and who are untouchable by that junta, are the Dhammakayo monk and his followers. They have the power in their hands to overturn an entire (unelected) autocracy, as the state bully-boys are terrified - petrified (for whatever reason) - of shedding their blood.  It is extraordinary!

 

And how ridiculous that it is the police who are calling out (in the video clip on this page) to the monks: 'Calm down! Stay calm!' Shouldn't it rather be the job of the meditating monks to school the police in 'staying calm'?!!  What a reversal of values and function.

I agree with thai3. Take all steps to break their contact with the outside world. Cut the power, water and food supply. Set up an anti wi-fi system around the temple and they will be at each others throats within a few days. Anyone that steps out of the temple grounds should then be arrested and tried.

A couple of points:

1. According to the paper we cannot name the abbot may well have absconded some time ago, paying a considerable sum to flee into exile.The temple's spokesman is supposed to be in Paris now.

2. The temple has a large number of followers living around Thailand. No doubt if the electricity and water were cut off they would be summoned to appear outside the temple , praying for peace ( ie drop the charges of embezzlement against the abbot) and would probably be encouraged to charge at the police/army in the hope some get bloodied and they can then tell the world how nasty the authorities are against 'innocent' people.

I realize the Junta is losing some 'face' but is that really enough of a reason to turn this into a "siege"?

 

Just take a step back, take a few breaths and try to avoid some sort of 1976/1992/2010 "black stain".

This seems to be an almost pathological response to recurring problems here; find someone to blame, assign a color/label (men in black, red-shirts, students, communists), then rinse.repeat.

 

Someone really needs to break the cycle, or just continue to give the "powers-that-be" the excuses they need to keep their boot on the throats of the citizens.

Very good observations, Mtls2005.

 

The current situation, though, is rather different - it seems to me - from those you mention. Those clashes from the past really represented struggles of oppressed peoples against a system of gross injustice and top-down approved corruption. In the present 'conflict', not any single party has so far come out of this looking good or on the side of justice - not the police (keystone cops), nor the junta (obviously), and not the fraudulent monk and his gullible followers. 

 

But this situation graphically illustrates what a mess a ruling class gets itself into when it sets up 'sacred cows' that no one is allowed to attack. The monkhood are one such sacred cow, and of course there is another - which cannot be spoken of here ....

So from the live stream I can see it's not a rich versus poor scenario. It's a rich versus rich scenario. High society house wives protesting. Thailands elite versus Thailands elite. Who can win this war? Nothing like the red shirts, this ones more like a chess match. Knights in shining armor clash on the Buddhist battlefield. Whilst Merlin the magician has disappeared into thin air.
