Strange things happening with facebook...

I don't post my phone number on facebook, nor ad that number to my account for any reason whatsoever..

But: My wife receives messages if she would connect to my name..... followed with one of my foreign numbers... ( actually how they get that number ? )

Same goes for asking her to ad/be friends with many of my family members ( name followed by phone numbers ) My family did not post their numbers as well...

Is facebook trying to merge numbers with the names/profiles on facebook ? and looking for a confirmation thru my friends ?

Anybody having similar experiences ?

The facebook phone app will upload every contact from the phone if you allow it to.

Essentially it steals all the data on your phone.

Somehow they come up with "people" suggestions with the people being ones I've not seen in many, 15+, years that have absolutely NO connections to the people on my friends list, or even any corresponding info in the phone....Somehow they cross link, digging up bones from years ago....Unwelcome & kind of spooky.....Also preceding any FB involvement....

We don't add friends unless they are real acquaintances....Someone that has an actual place in our lives....

Crazy enough, my phone is not having facebook app, nor my wife's.

I don't use this number on any phone, not in service since many years...

even don't know where i have the sim...

But, they even try to figur out the number i use with my true wireless box ( little wifi box from true ) actually they know that number even if it is not registered to my name and i am just using it sporadicly to connect if not home...

Your wife does not happen to have Whatsapp on the phone?

Nope, no whatsapp, but even then, this number is nowhere used or even known by my wife... still it appears on her screen with my name...

I'm a webmaster and have observed what Facebook does for a long time.

To summarize, Facebook does EVERYTHING it can to link profiles/people, and yes, it is breaching privacy indeed.

For someone else to get a "do you know?" question on Facebook, the following is enough to make it happen:

- you browsed the other person's profile

- the other profile was used on the same computer

- sharing phone/whatsapp contacts of course, not only phone numbers but also email addresses

- I'm unsure if under some circumstances it can access call and sms history

Facebook is a privacy nightmare. The only way to keep a facebook account clean is to use it from a dedicated phone that only contains contacts one is okay to share with Facebook, and all profiles, email accounts, gmail account, phone number, etc. are exclusively used on this phone and to never ever access any of these accounts another way.

Well, one key phrase there being "if you allow it to."  Of course it's going to take the data, if you allow it to.

I just recently set up Facebook on a new Android smartphone, and the app was very clear in ASKING me if I wanted it to import the contacts list from my phone. I clicked NO. And that was the end of it.

I'll second this. I used to have Facebook on my phone. Then some months ago I saw a familiar face on the people you might know list. This was a woman whose shop was across from the liquor stall on Suk I would stop by often for a late night beer. I knew her and would exchange pleasantries and that was it. Never had we exchanged numbers or FB, Line or whatever ids. Looking at her FB page felt like peeping through a window. Suddenly, I knew all about her family, where she lived, her friends and on and on, none of which she had ever volunteered any time we had talked. Icky, felt like a voyeur. And I guess likewise she had seen my page.

To this day I am not sure how FB decided to put us in touch. The only thing I can think of is that they were co-locating us via GPS coords. And that wasn't the only time. I had a few more of people pop up as as possible friends that FB had no business knowing about before I decided enough was enough and deactivated FB. And haven't missed it one bit since.

Those things i am aware of but:

The numbers shown next to my name is nowhere on any phone in her or my possession, nor is the number from my brother...

Nor is the Phonenumber from the true wifibox...

No phone or tablet has any facebook app installed, even i have "rooted" every phone to ensure all facebook 'working around" is eliminated or controlled.

In case of the asking to connect with name and number, it must be that they are comparing databases worldwide with names in someones friends list ?

But it beats me that they "know" the true number from the wifi and that they ask me to ad that number as my phone number...

comparing friends lists is the simplest and number one thing they do...
