KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia will sweep one of the terminals at Kuala Lumpur international airport for toxic chemicals after Kim Jong Nam was murdered there with a nerve agent last week, as authorities said they would issue an arrest warrant if a North Korean diplomat wanted over the death did not come forward.

Kim Jong Nam was murdered on Feb. 13 at the budget terminal of Kuala Lumpur's main airport with VX nerve agent, a chemical classified by the United Nations as a weapon of mass destruction.

The police forensic team, fire department and the Atomic Energy Licensing Board will be conducting the sweep at the airport, Malaysian cops said in a statement on Saturday.

The sweep will be conducted from 1 a.m. on Feb. 26 (1700 GMT on Feb. 25), the police said.

The airport terminal will not be closed, but the search areas would be cordoned off, a police official told Reuters.

VX is one of the deadliest chemical weapons created by man: just 10 milligrams of the nerve agent or a single drop is enough to kill in minutes, experts have said.

Kim Jong Nam was waiting at the departure hall when he was attacked by two women who splashed his face with the liquid. He died en route to hospital.

Malaysian police on Friday said one of the women had suffered from the effects of VX and had been vomiting.

The two women - one Indonesian and one Vietnamese - have been detained, along with a North Korean man. Seven other North Koreans have been named as suspects or are wanted for questioning.

Malaysian police are also sweeping other locations in Kuala Lumpur the suspects may have visited.

Selangor state police chief Abdul Samah Mat said earlier on Saturday authorities raided an apartment in an upscale Kuala Lumpur suburb earlier this week in connection with the killing, and were checking for any traces of chemicals in the apartment.

DIPLOMAT WANTED

Samah also said 44-year-old Hyon Kwang Song, a second secretary at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur, wanted for questioning in the murder has yet to come forward. He is one of the seven North Koreans wanted in connection with the case.

"Reasonable" time will be given for the diplomat to come forward before police take further action, Samah said, adding that if the diplomat did not cooperate, the police would issue a notice under Malaysian law, compelling him to appear before the investigation team.

"And if he failed to turn up upon given this notice, then we will go to the next step by getting a warrant of arrest from the court," he told reporters.

It was unclear if the embassy official can be detained since police have said he has diplomatic immunity.

Four others are believed to have fled to North Korea, while two are still in Malaysia. The whereabouts of another North Korean, Ri Ji U, are unknown, Samah said.

"PRANK WITH BABY OIL"

Meanwhile, Indonesian embassy officials on Saturday met with their national Siti Aishah - one of the suspects detained in connection with the murder - for the first time since her arrest.

Aishah told embassy officials that she believed she was part of a reality television show when she lunged at Kim Jong Nam at the airport with what she believed was baby oil.

She said she had been paid 400 Malaysian ringgit ($90.15) to participate in the act.

"She only said in general that somebody asked her to do this activity... She said she was given a kind of oil, like baby oil," Indonesian deputy ambassador Andreano Erwin told reporters after meeting Aishah.

She will be detained until March 1, after which police will decide whether to prosecute or release her, Erwin said.

Vietnamese officials also met with their national but declined to comment.

Malaysian police have said the two women had rehearsed the attack before carrying it out and had been instructed to wash their hands afterwards.

How on earth did one untrained little girl manage to handle and deliver probably the most lethal substance in the world.

She was conned it seems to think it was a TV stunt but, how did she manage to get VX liquid on a cloth and rub it on his face without getting any on her skin.

I believe it has to pass through the skin barrier. The eyes, the mouth, nose and ears, open cuts, genitalia and anus probably make for more successful penetration to the nervous system.

The articles mentions them washing their hands. Also not quite untrained, they had rehearsed it.

Skin contact is enough, sweat pores are all it needs. Once it's on the skin it's in. Atropin then has to be injected in the first 20 to 30 seconds and the injections have to continue until the victim starts to suffer Atropin poisoning which can be reversed. The injections are self done with a frighteningly large needle with a press button spring release plunger. Ram the needle in, usually leg muscle, then press the button. If you saw one you might decide just to die from the VX.

Any other bits of exposed skin you can treat with Fullers earth pads that will absorb the VX, it's a liquid not a gas.

I have read that the women applied separate compounds that when mixed together (on the victim's face) produced the VX.

If you have the required laboratory equipment and the training required it's possible. I don't think they have one of those lab's in KL air terminals.

Vacuum boiling is part of the process, don't reckon you can do that in an airport.

North Korea supposedly have 5,000 tons of chemical weapons. If they are all as poisonous as VX, they have enough to kill 1 trillion people.

Scary world. Must be other guys on TV who have done some NBC training. Gives you a good idea how scary the whole thing is.  Some of the real nasty sh-t came from trying to find antidotes to other nasty sh-t.

Agreed. The number and range of CBRN threats out there is pretty frightening. There were times I used to wonder why we even bothered training. All things considered, our protective measures always seemed woefully, and almost futilely, inadequate. If these ‘weapons’ ever start getting thrown around in earnest, we’re looking at the end of life as we know it.

Our standing joke was if you're going to use an Atropin spring injector don't keep your legs together or you'll pin them together.

Just heard on tv that the girl was given a spray bottle probably like the ones you push down the plunger on the top to spray whatever is inside, like make your shirt slightly damp when ironing. If that's the case she is very lucky not to get it on her own skin. Then again the guys who conned her wouldn't care anyway.

The scary thing is that perhaps they have come up with some new and innovative ways of using this dangerous substance.

Either these two people had to be trained or they and everybody in the airport got very lucky.   That luck extends to the first responders, hospital personnel and those in the morgue.

That's exactly what is being reported on South Korean television today

Still can't see VX being produced by mixing some chemicals in a jar or on a bit of cloth. It's complicated process done in a lab' and requires very accurate measures and temperatures.

Another thing I noticed on the news was the team 'sweeping' the airport were using a radiation monitor. VX is not an isotope so why use a rad' meter. 'Just to look as though they knew what they were doing'?????

Yes, well watch this space and wait for the first mass attack. Could be a train, plane,bus....confined space, tiny amount required, 'sprayable ', undetectable in most places. The perfect terror weapon.

And even if you spray onto clothes  or something like fabric seats it really hangs about. Luckily they still haven't managed to get it to work from an aerosol only hand push spray bottles and that makes it very difficult for the 'sprayer' to handle. That's why those girls were very lucky to survive handling it. Then again for me it may not even be pure VX but a Sarin based chemical, they are both members of the same nasty sh-t family.

Channel News Asia is reporting that North Korea ran a significant illegal weapons program, procurement and supply , out of KL ; and that this "hit" was organised by 2 ministries with KL the preferred location because it has visa free access for North Koreans to enter Malaysia.

Really, it's long past time that the ludicrous buffoon in KL is put out to pasture.

Malaysia sure seems to go through some rough times at the moment. They are fast eating through their foreign reserves while the Ringgit is still falling, the 1MDB scandal is still ongoing, TWO Boeing 777 lost and now the center of a very public family drama that involves weapons of mass destruction.
