I once saw a trio of young Thais try it on with a big Western guy after some arguing. He smacked them round pretty good and yes, they pulled out blades after getting their noses broken. But then the white guy pulls out a <deleted> 6 foot bullwhip! What a freak show. He had them running and screaming for their lives. I doubt they'd ever heard of or seen such an cruel device. I could tell catching those barbs on the end of the whip really hurt by the way they shrieked so loud. You've never heard such a racket.

Whatever he is, it is NOT a Dutch man. Yugoslav of some sorts, but definitely NOT Dutch. Wrong name, way too hairy, wrong face. Just saying.

It`s the same in England. Get into an argument with a young thug then he and all his mates will either beat you or stab you to death. Probably happens more often in the UK then it does in Thailand. If you don`t believe try reading the news reports yourself.

The Dutchman is obviously a tourist and hasn`t learned the basics of staying safe in Thailand yet. In incidents like these that I have experienced many times, it is best to let it be, continue on your merry way and live another day.

Yes we get a few cases of fights with knives but not like your end, every dam day including trying to burn people alive. In the UK you hear of every single case, here unless social media picks it up you do not hear about the daily events.

The Dutchman is obviously a tourist and hasn`t learned the basics of staying safe.

In most countries the police make a big effort to look after the tourists, here its how much can we take off them. In most countries they have a rule of law, here it's now everyone for themselves and its getting worse by the day

Some of the poster on here, I just do not know whether to laugh at, or feel sorry for, but your comments say alot about you and that is, ignorant stupid and lacking education. maybe drink to.

Tourists are robbed right left and centrer, its away of life for some.

Comments like "And of course as they're superior Westerners they would just clip any Asian round the ear and send them on their way"

says it all.

If you do not want the tourists here, get the lady from TAT to stop trying to deceive tourists will false claims and for once tell the truth.

Some here have totally racialist views brought on by being scared of their own shadow. As for loosing face. 3 words come to mind, (not printable).

Grow up and stop being a looser if you can

As bad as this is, at least local Thai's made sure he got to a hospital. I believe the majority of Thai's are decent people.

A one on one fight just never happens here does it? At home two guys have a row, they take it out side and everyone lets them have a go until someone has had enough.

Here, pack mentality, and when you are losing, cheat.

Morals are the very fabric of society, and the lack of them here says volumes for the mindset.

Land of smiles? Land of a stab and a pack beating, might be more appropriate, though TAT might have some problems putting that in their brochures.

The "Minister" would be wondering what is stabbing and beating? And following along, crimes against tourists? What? Where?

Those versed with English history will know of Lord Nelson who it is said "He raised the telescope to his blind eye and said. 'I really do not see the signal"

Anybody who get's into a fight or violent altercation will want to win!

This notion some TVF posters spew out at every chance, that fights in the West are like some noble 1:1 contest between gentlemen; and that after the fight they shake hands and share a beer - what a load of romantic codswollop! Talk about living the Hollywood La-La fantasy.

Wake up - it was never ever like that. Gangs of lowlife thugs, robbers, druggies, boozers were always ready to kick the crap out of anybody - to rob them, molest your gf, because you support different football team, have different color skin, are a different religion or whatever; or maybe because they're pissed, drugged up or just bored. Or any combination of these. The only thing they respect and are scared of his someone whose prepared, capable and willing to dish out more violence than they can.

One of the points of a gang is that you fight as a gang. And certainly don't sit and count numbers first to make sure all's fair and square.

All this nonsense about 1:1, no weapons, never hit a female, is fantasy land. Maybe at junior school.

I read about stabbings in the UK each week, gun crime is less but still regular. Serious assaults, with or without weapons, sex attacks, innocents being one punched and killed, gangs setting on people and stabbing them to steal their bikes or smart phone.

The Thai bashes on here seem to think these things happen only in Thailand. If that's so, and the West is so superior, off you go.

"If that's so, and the West is so superior, off you go."

Your usual solution then?

Well, you know, it is a different culture you know, so they approach matters in their own cultural way, you know. If I understand all the whining correctly, it's the Thais that winning all the street fights, you know. So that probably means that the arrogant farang cry babies get their a$$es whipped, you know. Maybe it hurts, you know, pain in the brain you know, thinking you're some wealthy winner, you know, ruling the world you know, thinking you're some hot shot you know and then get beaten by a couple of tiny Thai, you know. Feels bad for the farang ego, you know. Coming to Thailand you know, thinking you know it all, you know, teaching them your moral you know, as if your moral is the only right one, you know. Guess it is a bit Anglo Saxon, you know, to have that attitude of being superior you know.

So two Thais armed with knives against one unarmed farang is "good Thai culture", if "you know" what I mean?

Where did I say it was "Good Thai Culture"? I suggest you read again, again and again until you get the picture, if you know what I mean?

They'll never get the picture.

Travel halfway around the world, violate every social norm in a culture about which you have not a clue, expect the locals to bow down and pay respect to your magnificence, then take it upon yourself to educate them as to their error of their ways.

Then be angry you ended up in the hospital instead of thankful you're still alive.

Sadly typical western attitude, yet some still wonder why they keep taking a beating.

A typical eastern attitude,  whereby 'bayonet practice' against wayward foreign tourists is as acceptable as a boxing day hunt :(

Beautifully put. As a westerner I feel embarrassed reading some of these comments.

I've been coming to Samui for 10+ years. When I come here I am a guest, and I respect the locals. This is not my country.

The Dutch guy had a lucky escape. Maybe next time he'll put his ego to one side, and walk away. There is no need to get into fights here!

That said, I hope he makes a full recovery.

I'll restrain from referring to your post as half witted because you've clearly forgotten that two vile thugs should be arrested for attempted murder for twice stabbing a person.

BTW, can you explain to posters how you have arrived at the assumption that "every social norm" was violated?

Can you also explain how stabbing someone would not be labelled as a violation!

Please leave Thailand and don't come back, we don't need the likes of you, thanks

After over 12 years living in the Kingdom, I've yet to be involved in a serious altercation with anyone, Thai or not.  I've spent more than enough time on the islands in the Samui archipelago to understand how things can go wrong very quickly for foreigners behaving badly there.  Arrogance and excessive alcohol consumption can easily become a lethal combination.

Never would I defend the criminals accused of stabbing of an unarmed man, but I do see how the poor attitude displayed by many tourists leads to their demise at the hands of those they so drastically underestimate.

To the contrary, it would seem the gentleman actually comprehends the essence of how to comport himself in order to enjoy the best possible experience on Koh Samui.  Are you suggesting he should have learned to be more like the Dutchman?  Discretion is the better part of valor, especially around those islands down Surat Thani way.

I've lived here longer than you and neither have i been involved in trouble, but, arrogance, excessive drinking and trouble causing is not confined to foreigners as you seem to imply so don't tarnish one side when both are potentially as bad as one another

What i am suggesting is he clearly hasn't spent enough time here to see bad behavior perpetrated by both Thais and foreigners.

Fair enough.  But please, take note of how many responses to these sort of topics are knee-jerk defenses of the poor innocent foreigner victim, when in fact there was usually substantial provocation leading up to the end result.  How is it that you and I have managed to stay out of trouble for so many years, yet others come for 2 weeks and end up in the hospital straight away?

Theres no doubting bad behavior on the part of an element of foreigners here, thats not in question.  All i'm saying is the increase in such behavior on the part of locals seems to be increasing.  It used to be the case here that if you kept your nose clean trouble would not come your way but as the times roll by i really don't think thats necessarily the case here anymore.

Theres also that old saying; it takes two to tango!

No question about it; the tourist areas of Thailand are more dangerous today than ever before.  I can think of several contributing factors, such as ever increasing substance abuse (especially meth-based drugs) and related gangsterism, increasing nationalist sentiment, simmering resentment towards westerners, who are now generally perceived as arrogant, vulgar, and disrespectful, and so on.  This is why, whenever I am out and about and see so many red-faced foreigners behaving exactly that way, I find myself feeling that maybe those folks are the problem -- not the Thai people they seem so determined to aggravate.

I'm afraid you're wrong my friend. I have seen plenty of bad behaviour from both sides.

The fact is if you're a respectful, decent non-aggressive type of person, you're very unlikely to end up in a street fight with the locals. As proven by the 3 of us having this conversation, none of whom have had this type of problem after many years.

My western friends living here all have the same mentality as me, and have all stayed out of trouble.

Unprovoked and random attacks on westerners here are pretty rare. That's more likely to happen back home in London.

i would agree though that Samui has become a lot more dangerous since I first came in 2001. But to me that is mostly due to growing resentment among the local men as Samui gradually became the party capital of the world.

Some say they should be grateful for the tourist dollar, but just imagine if the same happened in your home town.

Think I've got the picture now, you know - it's the farang's fault for not carrying a knife when having an argument with 2 tiny Thai's because it's a different culture, you know. Right?
