UK Passport Replacement Question

Featured Replies

If a UK citizen has a passport held by the courts in Thailand for a minor criminal complaint, can a replacement be obtained at the UK embassy?  Immigration would likely not replace the visa and stamps, but a hypothetical question.

No Probs Mate, I've decided to do the trips by Nok Air ( 2 Trips works out Approx 50% of the Agents fee )If Booked WELL In Advance So A No Brainer....

In order to get a new passport you would have to report your passport as lost or stolen and that requires a police report when you apply.

My U.K Passport is nearly Full,So Can I Get a New Passport by sending my application, the Fee & Photos to the Liverpool Passport Office, Thus Avoiding two trips to The Trendy Building in Bangkok.....My Current Passport was issued via the FCO ( Hong Kong )

No

They would not accept your application.

If you were able to get a new passport you would probably have difficulty legally leaving the country without an entry stamp in the new passport. Immigration would link the new passport with the old. If you are banned from leaving the country and immigration have been informed you'd have even bigger problems.

Thank you all for the information.  My question is would the embassy have been notified to not reissue a passport or not.

Thank again

The British Embassy has nothing to do with passport renewals or replacements. That is handled by an external agency called VFS who deal directly with the IPA in the UK that issues the passport.

The passport in question being held by a third party in relation to a pending court appearance by the passport holder is immaterial as far as VFS is concerned. As already stated by ubonjoe, they can only review and submit a replacement passport application with either the physical presence of the other passport or a police report about loss or theft of the other passport.

A U.S. citizen  with a valid passport  can obtain a new one at the U.S. embassy without filing a lost or stolen passport letter on his or her request.

I did this  in may 2015 simply because my old passport was expiring after 10 years of use.

it will cost you the normal fee of about $100 Dollars, and they will tell you it will take about 2 weeks time for the new passport.

You can pick up the new passport at the embassy, they will email you when it is ready for pickup.

This may not  be true however , if your passport is tied up in some legal dispute.

Every thing states you must apply here in the country for your passport. You are not allowed to mail in a application. Plus you would not have your current passport if needed.

Go to this webpage and go through the steps: https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports/y

Perhaps the info you saw was before they changed it to where you have to apply at Trendy about 3 years ago.

Joe, Thanks for you're reply,Looking at that link it looks like the ONLY Options I Have is either to make Two Trips to The Trendy Building OR An Expensive trip back to the U.K Am I correct in this assumption ??

No, if you are stamped in the country on the passport. You need to have a valid passport at all times you are in the country. Passport office in the UK would refuse you if you had an open entry for Thailand.

I am a dual national and stamped in on the other one at present. When I apply to renew my UK passport I will have it sent and returned to a UK address then brought out to me, which is legal.

A shame they can't do like my other one- took 10 days from EMS up to Bangkok and EMS back to be issued a new passport. The UK system is pathetic and two trips to Bangkok is ridiculous. Its about double in cost as well.

As He Would'nt be applying in Person,But through The Post Office Secure Mailing system.. ( I Would'nt have to send in my CURRENT Passport ) He is coming out early next year so he could then bring it out with Him ??

If you new somebody in Bangkok they could pickup your new passport for you. You would have to send your current passport to them so that it can be cancelled.

There also some agents the will do the everything for you. I think the standard fee is 5000 baht to have them do it.

Thanks again.  Would the Thai court have issued notification to the UK embassy that this citizen's passport is being held in connection with a case?  Therefore, do not reissue them another passport.  Not sure if this is the process or not, but hoping someone can tell me.

I don't know, but I highly doubt it.

But even if they haven't you have to lie in order to get a police report in order to apply for a new passport. The UK embassy do not issue passports, you have to apply at the Visa and Passport office in the Trendy building in Sukhumvit Soi 13. Usually it takes 2-3 weeks,  but it can take longer.

Even if you do get a new passport you may have problems trying to leave the country if the police/court have notified Immigration that you can't leave the country. That scenario is more likely and what you should be concerned about.

Joe I Have a VERY Good friend in LONDON Who is quite willing to do everything for me,I Will download the Form Fill it in & Sign it & Send it back to him,He will then send it to The Passport Office in the U.K With everything they need & He will then bring the NEW Passport out to me when he comes to Thailand next year, The Only reason I Need to have a New Passport is the lack of empty pages I Have left, My Current Passport Doesn't Expire until 2021......

Given that the BBC's local correspondent is stuck in Thailand because there's a court case against him and his passport has been impounded, your chances don't look very good. --

But even if you succeed in obtaining a new passport, it will have no evidence of your lawful entry into Thailand, so as soon as you present it at an immigration desk when you depart, the game will be up.

So................ the UK passport office look at your old passport and see that you have no exit stamp for Thailand.

Do you not think they may think that is odd ?

No it is NOT legal - you have to apply for renewal in the country in which you are located.

Likewise the lack of an entry record into the UK.

And whilst being without the current passport in Thailand maybe some issues with 90 days reporting, etc.

Actually, I don't think there is any physical evidence (stamp) of entry into the UK, and I doubt UKPA are linked to immigration (Old Git may clarify that)  - but an excellent point about the consequences of being 'stopped' in Thailand with no passport.

Pretty unlikely but the monkey house is a realistic outcome if you are.

You are Correct..............There is NO Arrival Stamp into the U.K For U.K Passport Holders.....& I DON'T Think you have to surrender the OLD / Excisting passport when doing it through the Post Office, I Can't remember ever having to do that Just as long as when you get the renewal you then " Cut the Corner off " the OLD Passport...Making it UNUSABLE !!!!!  Doing it that way I Could hold on to my CURRENT Passport here in Thailand & When I Receive my new one would just go to TI & Have my Visa Transferred......

Renewing in Thailand you need to colour copy ALL pages from the existing passport. The original passport does not get sent to Liverpool by VfS Global.

I believe that VfS Global cut off the corner when the original is presented at their counters in Bangkok.

What you are proposing is against the passport agency rules. You must apply in Thailand.

If you think you can beat the system then go for it, but you are best advised to follow the rules to avoid consequential problems.

WRONG!

That  quote is from the website that relates to applications made WITHIN the UK.

You don't HAVE to make 2 unnecessary trips to Bangkok if you are prepared to pay an agent.
