Hi All. We were planning on bringing our large dog with us when we move back to Canada as cargo on our flights, which involves a stopover in Japan. Importing the dog into the Canada is not a problem, much easier than other countries, as long a one has a rabies vaccination. No chip required etc. Checking in at SVP seems to be straight forward with advance notice and some documentation.

The problem will be with our stopover in Japan. The ANA agent has informed us that the cargo (dog) will have to clear customs, and we would have to go through the whole pet check in procedure again in Narita. This is clearly not feasible, and we wouldn’t have the time for it anyways. Unless another agent informs us differently, we will have to scrap the idea, and leave the dog with family, but she is a western breed and has skin issues with the local climate, so taking her would be best.

Has anyone had experience with sending a large animal on a Pacific long haul flight with stopover?  We may have to try to do it through another country next trip.

I would like to avoid conjecture. If you have actual knowledge or experience with the subject, please share with us.

The ANA international agent (rather than ANA Bangkok)  stated that this is not the case, and  we will be able to complete the documentation in a special  quarantine room, so it may be possible that we can do this.  We will call again to triple check.

The question still stands if anyone has any experience with going through this process, how long it took, documents required etc. Cheers
