How to sabotage an old, still working air conditioner?

Featured Replies

The aircon in the living room of my rented house was made in 1988, according to the manufacturer, who I recently contacted about this model. While the unit still puts out chilled air, the cost to operate it compared to a recent model (installed in the bedroom) is fantastic. Turning everything off in the house but the newer aircon, the meter wheel spins at a good clip. But try the same with only the 29-year-old model and the wheel spins so fast you'd think it would fly right out of the glass housing.

The landlord, if I were to apply to him to put in a new, modern one would be: "But there is nothing wrong with the one that's there. It makes cool air." He doesn't give a toss about how much it costs to run -- he doesn't live there. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.)

So, given that the manufacturer says that there are no more official replacement parts for this unit, how would one go about sabotaging the aircon so that it gives the impression of not working/cooling any longer, without looking like I've meddled with it?

You could also let it suck in a pile of soot so that it blocks the pipe leading to the outside compressor.

In a short while the outside box will start making very loud painful noises.

Then you need to slip your ac maintenance man 200bt to call the landlord and condemn it.

Check your lease first as some leases put repair of pumps , air conn, hot water etc back on the tenant. In the meantime, I hope a small animal doesn't get into the unit and pee on the circuit board.

I wonder if your landlord ever reads this forum ?  :whistling:

There isnt an air pipe between inside and outside unit, only sealed pipes full of refrigerant.

yes,it doesnt even need to get as far as those non existant pipes but the process the same and the result of the painful condensor is the same:shock1:

Some cracking replies on this thread....or was it you back in 2007

I don't understand. The aircon is working. You rented the place with the old aircon.

If you want a new one, buy one yourself instead of destroying other people's property.

Back in my Mid East days, the recommend way to kill a dodgy air con was to switch it on and once it ran up Off. Several times would kill it dead.
