Great-Grandson Of Last Burmese King Wants Thai Soap Canceled

By Asaree Thaitrakulpanich, Staff Reporter

BANGKOK — A direct descendant of Burma’s last king on Friday said he is offended by a Thai soap opera’s unflattering depiction of his great-grandfather’s court and called for it to be pulled from the air.

Soe Win, who is descended from King Thibaw, reached out to Khaosod English on Friday to say the series, which has angered some in Myanmar for its obvious parallels to the 19th-century Konbaung dynasty, was not helpful for good relations between the neighboring countries.

Good job there isn't any film transcript of the Kho Tao trial for him to view then.

Rest assured the screams from the offended Thais would be heard in Mandalay if the scenario was reversed and the Burmese did a soap opera in the same style as this.

EXACTLY!!!  The purveyors of Lese Majeste are incredibly obtuse when it comes to the royal taboos of other countries.

I agree. If it's good for the goose, it's good for the gander.

Thailand talks up respect, so it's about time Thailand stood up to the plate. Unless it's all sanctimonious BS. If it's all BS, carry on cherry picking, and I can continue not taking any of it seriously.

Best ever show to come from the States.

Pardon me, but wouldn't that be called SOUP:whistling:

I can't get my wife to watch the best movies in English just because of these weird soap operas.

Dear mods, I hope it's allowed to post a link freom a certain website here. This is not a Thai bashing post, I love the country and its people a lot. Thanks a lot for your kind consideration.

But what students learn at school has got nothing to do with the truth.

What's really annoying to me is that Thailand took so much from Cambodia away and now Thais look down on Cambodians as a lower class country.

Let's just take the "typical Thai dance." It's actually not from Thailand, it was taken away from Cambodia and Thailand's acting like they'd invented the wheels.Too many lies in the land of "wais?"

   Snip>

The Thais should also know that the Cambodians strongly feel the Thais have borrowed much from Cambodian culture and civilization but without adequate acknowledgment. The Cambodians claim that the Thai alphabet, Thai royal language and court customs, and classical dancing and architecture have their roots in Cambodia.

Interestingly Thais in their history books learn just the opposite – that the Cambodians adopted Thai arts, dance, and architecture.

The Thais also have numerous misunderstandings of Cambodians being influenced by the media, films, and drama.< snip>

The actual Cambodian dance where sometimes half naked women are dancing is actually similar to a language. Each movement with the dancers' hands has a certain meaning. Such a dance is basically telling a story, but Thailand has made such dance acts to its own culture, which is not true. A sort of betraying Cambodia?

It's not nice to lose face over history that isn't Thailand's history. It all goes back to the Kingdom of Siam, etc... and very interesting to read some historical facts about it! But what sort of history do students learn at school? Teachers teach them lies, nothing else.

I've burned my fingers once when I taught some high school students the truth about Thailand's history, which was exactly the opposite what was in their books. No comment.

It's always only about Thailand. Even now, Thai citizens are not allowed to visit Khao Phra Wihan, the temple where Thailand had a war with Cambodia not too long ago.

I've met some foreign/Thai couples who told me that they could go to the temple from Cambodia, but their Thai wives were not allowed to visit the temple. (Please Google war between Thailand and Cambodia over this temple only a few years back.

Before you could drive to the temple and many Thais, but also Cambodians made good money with tourism. Now it's impossible to go there and they shot themselves in their feet.

They didn't just destroy some parts of the temple when they shot with mortars at each other. The result was that some people got killed, a Thai friend and soldier at this time has lost his right leg and the business with tourists is gone for both countries.

And they made a lot of cash, just driving through the national park was 500 baht for one foreigner. These people are now jobless and they can hardly make an income with a noodle soup stand.

It would be great if somebody here on this forum has tried that with his Thai wife just recently. Thanks a lot for any responses.

On that note I wonder who exactly gave them the gender name of Soaps ?  More appropriate would have been Slops

Those TV shows were sponsored by detergent manufacturers and aimed mostly at women. Today they are from P & G, Nivea etc.

Had McDonald's, Taco Bell and maybe Pizza Hut been sponsoring the shows, then maybe they'd be called SLOPS?

Thank you for explanation. The mind boggles had they been initially sponsored by breast enlargement manufacturers

Thank you very much, teacher.

Seriously, your post was excellent.

I just finished reading your link, very informative:

My Thai girlfriend said when I wanted her to go to Cambodia with me:

"Cam-boo-di-ah bad. Cannot"

By the way, do you have any more dancer illustrations?

I've visited the temple with my school colleagues, then my Thai family and another time with some friend who came to Thailand. Not only the park rangers wanted 500 baht, also the entrance fee on Cambodian territory was about 300 baht. Then the mostly crap they sold, all the fake cigarettes and other stuff like porn DVD's, etc was good money for all of them. Nobody likes to smoke Marlboro's made in Cambodia, believe me.

Friends of mine who live in Kantharalak, which is only a few km away from the border fled their house and stayed at my house for a couple of days because it was so dangerous. Bullets don't know where they fly to...

A lot of Thais from Kantharalak, ( Sisaket province), Khun Haan, Khuk Khan, Phoosing and many other places nearby had a steady income and it wasn't bad. But all was over when the soldiers started to shoot at each other.

Ironically, did a mortar also destroy a nice part of the temple. I could send you quite a lot of half naked Khmer dancers, but you can Google them.

They really destroyed a lot of peoples' future, many Thais couldn't pay the school fees anymore, ( even when the education should be free, but it isn't with all the "hidden fees") a lot of them who'd just "bought" a new car had to give it back because they lost their jobs and their income and that goes on and on and on.

Human stupidity can be (is) highly dangerous and the politicians at this time with Mr. T. on top weren't very helpful at all. When they had to follow the old French map, that wasn't even correct and the International court "ruled" that it's on Cambodian territory and not on Thailand's soil, they all lost. Calling Den Haag was a joke within a joke.

With a little bit of brain on both sides, the border would still be open and people would make decent money. Now it's a dead end road with a lot of jobless people.

I've never heard of a war with a real winner, in the end, they're all losers. And that Thailand needed the International court was a big joke.

A meeting with all the big shots from the area would have solved the problem and nobody would have lost face. Thailand has lost one very important income, plenty of busses every day full with foreigners from all over the world was good money. But they just didn't get it.

Losing face leads to many problems and also to facebook, please google and there's a Khmer Angkor Wat facebook page with nice photos. I've attached three, the others are self-made. G'Night.

I wonder what the response from Thailand would be if someone used a member of the Thai royal family in a soap opera.  Isn't the Yul Brynner movie the King and I still banned in Thailand and it's a serious offence if caught with a copy.

They would try and burn down the Embassy - these folk seem to have no concept of good neigbourness and proportion over minor slights. Great ambassadors for how Buddhism can make for peaceful relations. And just imagine if something serious transpired between these countries - you would probably need those submarines and badly maintained helicopters then.

I watched this clip for about 5 seconds and my blood began to boil.

Simply brain cell killing TV.

The end is actually quite funny... just make sure to mute.

A bit petty by the Burmese guy, and we all know the Thais would be absolutely livid if the boot were on the other foot, but that's okay too as we know they're 'special'.
