Extension of 60-day Tourist Visa

Featured Replies

I think I know the answer to this one but I wanted to check and confirm.

I already have a 60-day TV and will extend it by another 30 days when it is close to expiry. Once I get the second TV is it then possible to extend that one by further 30 days?

Also last I checked Vientiane was the least hassle to get another visa and that Savannakhet was being more discernible about whom it granted TVs to. That doesn't overly concern me as as I have always been to the former.

You can extend every 60 day entry from a tourist visa for 30 days. The only restriction is that you can only do one for each entry from one.

Vientiane is the best choice. At this time Savannakhet is asking for financial proof and a  ticket out of the country.

As I understand it you are permitted two tourist visas per calendar year. Is that correct?

My first tourist visa was granted at Royal Thai Consulate in Hull. And so my second one (from Laos) will be the last one I can get this year. Correct?

That is not correct. There is no such rule.

You can get back to back for as long as a consulate will issue them to you . For some locations that is 3 back to back. After that you can go to different location and get more visas.

Surprising to hear. Even the Royal Thai Consulate at Hull advised that I could only get two tourist visas. There seems to be some confusion around this issue it seems.

There is no problem getting a tourist visa from Savannakhet as long as you can show a bank statement/book showing at least 20K baht (equivalent) and a ticket out of the country.

They may have been referring to visa exempt entries (no visa). There is a limit of 2 visa exempt entries per year when entering by land.

I think this would be where the confusion stems from. The advisor was definitely talking about TVs and not visa exempt entries. Anyway thanks for clarifying.

Just to clarify... Vientiane will issue a Single Entry Tourist Visa without proof of funds or onward flight?  All they need is an application form, photocopies of passport pages and photos?

Yes. They currently don't, as a general rule, ask for proof of funds or onward flight.

Any idea how long the 3 back to back lasts? I've got that -- with the warning stamp above the 3rd, from Vientiane on June 2, 2015. Any idea when I might get another TV from Vientiane?

Good news is, my 50th b-day is at the end of this year :-)

Thanks!

At a minimum, it lasts until you get a new passport. Once you have a new passport, you will normally be OK unless the consulate staff recognize you as someone they decided was getting too many tourist visas in the past. In practice, this would be very unlikely unless you had a big argument with them over it or something.

Thanks Brit Tim!

I made my first international trip with my old college buddy in 1988... from Plattsburgh to Montreal. I'll never forget his advice: "Don't ever argue with immigration officials... don't even joke with them!"

Fortunately, I've heeded that advice ever since & pass it along to all who care to read it here. It has served me well for decades :-)

Cheers!

I requested a 60 day multiple entry visa from the Thai Consulate in Chicago IL.  I paid the $200, sent in my passport and was returned with the page size  stamp.  Now I am nearing my 60  day end, and I checked my passport and it said it expired after 30 days!!!   I know now I should have checked, and will be going to the immigration office tomorrow, but my question is, did the immigration official at the airport in BKK where I arrived make a mistake and should have dated it for 60 days?

Yes, if you have a valid Tourist Visa you should have been given 60 days.

IO’s do make mistakes, and if they have it will be corrected at the immigration office.
