BANGKOK: -- The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has set up free vehicle examination centres across the country to ensure road safety during long holiday Songkran Festival.

DLT director-general Sanit Promwong said the vehicle checkup centers are now open in 2,000 locations nationwide to all cars and motorcycles. The service will remain until April 24.

Motorists can see a “free checkup” sign put at the centers.

The free examinations list contains 20 items, including the braking system, tire condition, windshields, oils and liquids, the battery and the lighting system.

For public transportation, Sanit said passenger vans operating on inter-provincial routes are required to have GPS and driver identification devices installed by the end of this month.

The measure is aimed at allowing for real-time monitoring of the vehicles during their operation so that authorities can identify their whereabouts, measure their speed and time spent on the road as well as observe the driver’s behavior.

Sorry your car failed all the 20 items on the list and is completely unsafe. Your car may burst into flames at any second. You are free to go and have a nice trip.

First you have to get the speeding motorist to stop his journey to their destination ! can't wait to see the figures of voluntary motorists going for a safety check

This is one of the main things I can't understand about vehicle safety management in Thailand; a vehicle is stopped, noted to have defects and even declared "Not fit for purpose" but yet the agency allow them to continue with it's use with a promise of "Yes of course I'll fix it"  Coming from a Health & Safety industry this just boils my piss.

Surely allowing this is "Gross Misconduct" on the part on the agency stopping the vehicle ! . . . . . . Yes I can hear you all shouting out loud . . . . ."WELCOME TO THAILAND"

How is this going to work?

Driver: "Hello. I'm here to have my car inspected to see if it's road worthy"

Car Centre: "Okay, wait 30 minutes and we'll get back to you"

30 mins later......

Car Centre: "Sorry, sir. You car is dangerously unsafe to drive and not fit for the roads. We will have to keep your car here until you pay to have it fixed or have it scrapped"

Driver: "Oh, sure. I will take the bus to Issan and not drive my car. How far to the nearest bus station?

Car Centre: "The nearest bus station is a 100 Baht taxi or an hour's walk"

Driver: "Today is a lovely day. I think I will walk to the bus station. Thank you"

What a load of old b*****. Police and government, do your jobs!

How about a driver examination center !

The number of accidents caused by faulty equipment is neglible,........ it's the drivers stupid

Reminds me of this school bus ditty:

What holds this bus together;   the nut behind the wheel

This a great idea, who can pass up anything for free?

During Songkran, to make better use of these inspection centers and save cost get them setup with the police tents so the police have plenty of company sitting and playing cards while all the violators goes by.  Wave a bottle of Sangsome or Leo that would get them to put in for the inspection.

Before they do, I would like to be the first to declare this to be a success now.

I would take this offer up during Songkran and go and get my motorbike throoughly checked.

However I am concerned that some <deleted> retard will throw a bucket of water in my face while I am driving and cause me to crash.
