ISS in Singapore at Netball Competition Samui Senior Girls at Top SE Asian International Schools Games

KOH SAMUI: -- Traveling to Singapore from Koh Samui for the competition the International School of Samui (ISS) Girls Netball Team participated in the SEA U-16s netball tournament March 12-13, hosted by the Tanglin Trust School.

 

The competition saw 17 international schools from across South East Asia take part and the winning team in both U19s and U16s categories was the specialist Singapore Sports School. The team from ISS showed great resilience in their first ever competitive games against other schools; winning and drawing games and losing others. They left the tournament on a high with a better knowledge of the rules and a focus to improve and do even better in 2018.

 

“At ISS we always strive to provide a well-rounded and active environment for our students never allowing our size and location to hinder those opportunities”, commented ISS spokeswomen accompanying the team to Singapore. “For this particular event the senior students spent months fundraising to achieve their goal of traveling to the tournament at a reasonable cost. Miss Mooney, our ISS science teacher, led the coaching and fundraising and supported the girls over the weekend.”

 

“My greatest wish would be for more competitive practice”, said Miss Mooney: “If other international schools on the island could develop their team-sports provision and inter-school games this would give all students some games practice… meaning they would be on a level-playing field against larger international schools across the region. Thus, we hope to see the other island international schools develop their sports provision”.

 

ISS strongly believes sport keeps children active and healthy and is a vital tool in learning to work with others with children getting a positive vibe and sense of achievement from playing sport; which researchers say has a direct correlation in improved academic results and mental health.

 

The British school ethos was built on values of teamwork, team-sports, sports etiquette, camaraderie and training discipline at ISS, notes the Admissions Director: “We are strongly committed to these values – this academic year our students have competed against other international schools in competitions ranging from football, swimming, and chess to netball. We still have basketball to look forward to as well as a number of swim meets this academic year.  Next year this will be developed further with provision for Triathlon and Dance. Pupils are encouraged to take part in inter-house competition covering sports, swimming, music and drama throughout their time at ISS”.

 

Netball is a tactical and fast game requiring players to be analytical and well-disciplined on court.  The Olympic recognized sport is played throughout the Commonwealth countries and features as a core sport at the Commonwealth Games which take place every 4 years. Netball was introduced at ISS in 2016 with girls from both the senior and junior schools playing regularly. The aim of the school is to increase more friendly games against schools and clubs on the island and in the region.

 

Visitors to the school are welcome, where they can learn more about the sports opportunities at ISS. If your child is an outstanding strong in sports there are opportunities to apply for sports and swimming scholarships which help towards tuition fees.

What is going on at this school?  Seems to be more expulsions over drug related issues and kids leaving over the last couple of months.  Does anyone know what is happening, would be nice to understand for new potential parents coming to the island?

The school had a zero tolerance policy when it comes to drugs. Students who are suspected of using drugs can be asked to take a drug test. I only heard of one kid in this school year who was suspended for not willing to take a test. He was later let back in after successfully passing the test.

ISS is no longer offering 6th form (A levels), so some kids decided to leave ahead of their IGCSE to enroll in boarding schools at Bangkok or Phuket. Recently the school formulated a partnership with Bromsgrove so after IGCSE's ISS students can go there for their A levels without paying enrollment fees. Sadly Samui is not big enough to offer a quality education all the way to 18 years. Then again, kids have to move off the island anyway for further study, so they might as well take that step at age 16. 

My kid is in ISS and overall I've been very happy with her achievements and progress.
