Looking For British Comedy?

Today everybody uses the World Wide Web and e-mail, but many new comers do not realise what other services

are available on the Internet.

One such service is the Usenet News Groups, that predate the WWW.

There are over 100,000 groups covering just about every subject under the sun

and in many different languages as well, just in case you are not an English speaker.

The group I look at frequently is alt.binaries.multimedia.british.comedy.

In here people are posting the latest programmes of British TV, such as Have I Got News for You,

and also really old series like Steptoe and Son. It is a wonderful source of fun.

How do you get to these news groups? Well it is very easy.

You need to subscribe to a News Server.

Tera News offers a free service with 50Mb of download per day.

This will be a good place to start and find out just what is available.

If you become a serious downloader you will need to look for a service, with a good retention rate,

(this means how long messages stay on the server after they are posted). There are many to choose from.

I use News Group Direct who have a retention of 90 days on binaries.

I now have a subscription allowing me 3Gb/day at a cost of $13 a month.

In addition you will need a News Reader programme. Outlook Express has this feature, but if you become a serious

News Group addict you will need a programme like Agent or

NewsRover.

Large files are posted in parts, eg steptoe.mpg.001 - steptoe.mpg.100. To combine the parts you will need

JAS a neat little programme to join then together again.

Others may use .rar and for this you need WinRar which does a similar job.

If you want more info please post in this thread, and I will do my best to answer your questions.

Happy News browsing.

Sorry to be a nuisance, but can you talk me through the process of infringing people's copyrights and becoming a video pirate?

I've not used the newsgroups for years, never even considered them as a source for TV programming, duh!

Time to re-discover the joys of alt.binaries...... :o

Aren't we bending the rules a little discussing this?

I agree that the posters are in breach of copyright,

but I am not sure if that applies to the readers?

Does this mean we can talk about peer-to-peer file sharing now? And my favourite DVD stall on Si Lom?
