The diplomats were there to deliver letters of apology from British tabloids including The Sun, The Daily Mail and The Telegraph for branding the girls thieves and wrongly reporting they stolen a watch from an unidentified British tourist in September.

Well that's refreshing----I remember that it was first posted on Reddit, so the girls were completely innocent.....,,......

It's good that they've done it but what a shame that the best the tabloids could do is apologise.  It's a pity that the girls' families do not have the resources to be able to make the next move of suing the papers that have dragged out the tarnishing of these innocent girls.

British tabloids apologise to Hmong family in Chiang Mai for suggesting girls were pickpockets

FOUR British tabloids wrote an apology on Tuesday to the family of two northern hilltribe girls who they had accused – in reports published online – of stealing a watch from a British tourist.

 

The two young Thai girls were accused of being pickpockets after posing for a picture with a British woman who visited Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple in Chiang Mai.

 

Chiang Mai provincial governor Pawin Chamniprasert and Ben Robert Svasti, Britain’s Honorary Consul in Chiang Mai, delivered letters of apology from The Sun, the Daily Mail (Australian edition), The Telegraph, and Daily Express to the Hmong girls’ family.

 

The papers’ reports were published last October, and affected both the Hmong family and the tourism image of Chiang Mai.

 

After an investigation, it turned out that the tourist in the article had not lost her watch. The four tabloids then edited the article to note that the allegation was groundless.

 

Phujaras Jirapakorn, the father of the girls, said he was glad that justice was done for his daughters. He felt relieved after the foreign media outlets had apologised, he said. 

 

He had yet to think about seeking compensation but would discuss that with concerned agencies.

Thought this story was out and done with already. An apology should have been made instantly after the watch was found.
It can´t really be so serious that this has to be followed for almost a year.

I really hope there is a lawyer in the UK who will take this on and sue them.

Nah, they love these photo opportunitities to get in the press. Absolutely no work to do, just swing past, shake a few hands, smiles all around.

 

A whinging pommy standing at the door with an issue can't get to meet a UK government representative for days, only to be given one of the two standard replies.

 

1. Sorry can't do anything.

My sympathy for the children being dragged into stupid fake news liesm but this is quite possibly the most bizarre story of the year. It raises a number of unanswerable questions :

1. Since when did British tabloids ever apologize for anything they published? (And 4 of them at the same time !!!)

2. Since when did upper class British diplomats ever go grovelling to peasants in 3rd world countries on behalf of corporate interests ?

 

Maybe Times have changed. Or Maybe some powerful interests have those government BritHeads balls in a vice.

This is a disgraceful slur on the consulate staff. Everyone knows that they play tennis not golf.
