Phang Nga orders crackdown after 50 per cent of large hotels and resorts lack wastewater treatment
By The Nation

Phang Nga Governor Phakkhapong Thawiphat on Thursday instructed Tambon Khuekkhak Municipality to crack down on resorts and hotels releasing untreated wastewater into ditches that eventually drained into the sea at the popular Khao Lak Beach.

The wastewater reportedly has caused pollution and a foul smell at the beach, prompting many complaints filed with the provincial administration.

The governor on Thursday instructed the provincial natural resources and environment office to cooperate with the municipality to investigate and take action against owners of resorts and hotels.

A survey found that more than 50 per cent of resorts and hotels with more than 60 rooms still do not have proper wastewater treatment systems.

Noppadol Ingkhawatcharakul, an official with the Phang Nga environment office, said his office would take legal action against resort and hotel owners.

Noppadol said the survey also found that households and small resorts contributed to water pollution.

As a result, the office advised the municipality to build facilities to filter and add oxygen to run-off water before it drains into the sea.

Maybe go after the people that allowed this mess to happen in the first place...? Who signed off on the permits to build...?

Yes when hell freezes over. 50% you say rather ruins your credibility in the matter that you let it get to this level before action being taken. Oh sorry you received complaints that is what motivated you.

You want cheap lodgings and sewage disposal sorry you cannot have both.

Nothing will happen, and the tourists will go elsewhere.  The surrounding countries are more serious about being long term tourist centers

Let's hope they really take action, but why is this, together with other similar posts, in the Phuket forum?

Oh! What a surprise? The fact that it is a legal requirement obviously mattered not when they got planning consent and the OK to open.

There goes someones nice little kickback earner at the planning department.

Close them all until they comply! Then maybe they will understand it.

Your right they are finally sniffing the smell of money in the air. Money that has a trickle down effect i.e. supporting others. When discussing the trickle down effect that large corporations have it would be interesting to know the trickle down effect here i.e. how many thrive and survive off of ex-pats spending. The ladies food beverage bars cars furnishings condos the list is endless. What would Thailand be like without expats for a day??

Why bacteria levels at beaches are a state secret.

Too bad this cannot appear in the Hua Hin, patty and Koh Samui threads as well.
