i friend of mine wants to send me his used smartphone from germany to thailand by courier service, do i have any duties to pay for that?

Its pot luck. Over the years I have ordered new ones which generally got through without any duty but twice I had to pay so guess depends on the declared value + depends on how near to month end for customs beer money + a bit of luck. However in general when things have been sent FEDEX then I have no issues but with DHL , well I think their friends and colleagues work in /Thai customs !!!

Send it regular post preferably to a thai if you know one and place a note saying gift.
Doubt you will have trouble.
I just got a new one through and with DHL, wasn't expecting that.
